Bruchid beetle is a major pest of UK bean crops. The larvae develop inside the bean, hidden from view, which means the damage is often not obvious when you first look at the sample.

In this example, you can see how the beetles incubate inside the bean itself. The beans may look clean on the outside, with no visible holes, because the exit holes only appear once the adult beetle has fully developed and hatched. In some cases, the beetle never makes it that far, as many die inside the bean before they emerge.

This is why bruchid counts in beans almost always look worse than expected. When we soak the beans and cut them open, as shown here, we uncover internal damage that cannot be seen from the outside. A visual inspection of whole beans can therefore seriously underestimate the true level of bruchid damage in a crop sample.

Our biogas and environmental services have been supporting the sector since 2013.

Our commitment to the industry is clear: we continue to invest in new capabilities, technology, and equipment to help AD plant managers stay ahead of operational challenges.

We offer our customers access to an online portal that allows you to monitor your BMP results live, giving you greater visibility and control throughout the testing process.

Who doesn’t love boiling a bit of digestate? Here, we’re using steam distillation to extract VFAs before analysis by GC-FID.

This is our Glut-o-matic 2200 , and yes, that is genuinely its name. It automatically extracts gluten from flour.

This one’s for our grain and bakery people. If you’re working with wheat, for example, and need to measure gluten content, this is exactly the kind of tool you’d use.

Once the gluten is extracted, it forms a small, chewy ball, a bit like gum. From there, we can analyse its colour and quality.

And that matters more than you might think, because for some people, gluten really is a matter of loaf and death.
