We are so proud of Marika Pescosolido, who has been selected for the Millennium Fellowship, a joint initiative of United Nations Academic Impact and the Millennium Campus Network (MCN).

The Fellowship is a semester-long leadership development program that runs on campuses around the world, giving students the training, the connections, and the recognition to take their social impact to the next level, and it is exactly the kind of opportunity that rewards conviction as much as talent. Marika, one of our recent Scholars, has surprised us again and again with her enthusiasm to learn across so many different things and her instinct to make the most of every opportunity that comes her way, and this feels like a natural next step for someone who keeps showing up with that much curiosity and drive.

She continues to surprise us and make us proud each time, and we cannot wait to see what she does with everything this year opens up.

We love seeing our alumni connect with each other.
Equitech Futures Institutes mostly run virtually, helping young innovators, researchers, and civic leaders come together in one space, all from their own homes, to build social impact technology for the global majority. Since most programs run for a short time, it’s natural for learners to return to their routines and get back to their own commitments. But this community stays connected and has a friend to meet whenever they go places.

Recently, Belle Harison (Civic Tech ‘26) from Australia went to TrustCon in San Francisco and met up with Hillary Tran from the United States (Applied Data ‘22).
Rustum Shariq Mujtaba (Civic Tech ‘26) from Singapore was in London for an AI policy program with the Asia-Europe Foundation and met Mohammed Mohammed ((Futures ‘23) from Sudan. Adama Boubacar Oumarou (Futures ‘23) from Nigeria and Alaa Almouiz Farog Mohammed (Futures ‘23) from Sudan met each other IRL for the first time at Deep Learning Indaba in Lagos, Nigeria. Keshav Kumar Choudhary (Futures ‘24) from India ran into Agriya Khetarpal (Futures ‘22) from India at the Internet Freedom Foundation annual event in New Delhi.

Across the globe, this network helps our community to find each other across cohorts, countries, and time zones. And last month was a beautiful reminder of that.

Knowing what is coming up, and where it makes sense to put your time before things get busy, is honestly one of the more useful things you can do for yourself, especially if you care about tech, AI, impact and the direction society is heading in, which is exactly why September is worth spending some time with FuturesHub.

If you are a graduate looking for some direction, or you are already feeling a bit overwhelmed looking at the pile of applications ahead of you, FuturesHub is opening The Admit Track this September, a structured six month cohort built for anyone thinking about graduate programs and the opportunities that come with them. It walks you through the whole process, from narrowing down your list of programs and building out your calendar, to drafting statements that actually sound like you, lining up the right recommenders and getting ready for interviews, and you go through all of it alongside others who are working through the same thing, with FuturesHub faculty and Equitech Scholars available along the way.

Alongside the cohort, FuturesHub also brings live masterclasses, mentor office hours, QueBooks and QueBriefs library, which together make for a pretty thoughtful way to spend the month if you want it to be both productive and informative.

If this is your season of applications, or just a season of wanting a bit more direction and structure, this seems like a good place to spend some of it.

Our community has been showing up in rooms and on stages around the world.

Yaroslava Pohorielova, Futures ‘24, Ukraine, spoke on a career panel in Tokyo. Rustam Shariq Mujtaba, Civic Tech ‘26, Singapore, gave the keynote at the Navigating the United Nations Class. Ọghẹnẹmarho Jude Robinson, Civic Tech ‘26, Nigeria, spoke on local radio for BudgIT Nigeria. Collins Otieno Junior, Futures ‘24, Kenya, helped organize a Linguistics Workshop at USIU-Africa. Fahima Mohseni, Civic Tech ‘26, Afghanistan, attended the Caux Democracy Forum in Switzerland.

Proud of every one of them.

Congratulations, Anna!

This July, Anna Upreti, Futures ‘21, India, began a fully funded fellowship as a Technical AI Safety Research Fellow at ERA Cambridge, where she is researching frontier AI risk.

The ERA:AI Fellowship supports researchers working to reduce the risks posed by frontier AI systems.

It’s August. Somewhere a personal statement is sitting in one tab, half written, with ChatGPT open in the next one.

We ran Writing without the LLM once. Thomas Murray is running it again on August 21.

Sixty minutes, online. The whole premise: close the ChatGPT tab and write from your own experienced intelligence.

The timing is the point. This is the season of essays. Personal statements, scholarship applications, statements of purpose. If every draft starts in a chatbot, every draft ends up sounding like every other draft, and the reader on the other side notices.

The first draft is where the thinking happens. That is the part worth keeping.

Same AI model. Same question. Same weights. The only change was asking it to write the steps out first.

That was 2022. Four years on, the field still can’t agree on what those steps are doing. Writing the reasoning, or just showing reasoning that was already there?

FuturesHub’s QueBrief walks the actual evidence.

The finding worth sitting with: when researchers slipped model a hint that changed their answer, the written chain usually justified the answer on completely different grounds. Claude 3.7 Sonnet mentioned the hint about 25% of the time. DeepSeek-R1 about 39%.
