Delightful wild damselflies for Dan's 'Wild 30'!

Damselflies tend to be overlooked in favour of their better-known, more showy cousins, dragonflies. However, they are spectacular, fascinating creatures in themselves, markedly smaller and more delicate than dragonflies. A key identification tip is that, when resting, they close thier wings alongside their bodies.

Are you quick enough to take a snap? Here are some of our resident winged friends at the Science Oxford Centre!

It's Bike Week from 8th to 14th June! Bikes are not only a brilliant, eco-friendly way to get around but also a great way to encounter nature.

Dan says, "As a bicycle commuter in Oxfordshire, over the years, I have encountered Barn Owls, Merlin, Hare and even Polecats from the saddle!"

You don't really need to make a special effort to go out and encounter nature; you can make it part of routines like commuting to work!

Tell us what 'wild' things you have seen from your bicycle.

Dan's Wild 30: Follow the Thames!

It's World Oceans Day. While here in landlocked Oxfordshire, oceans feel very distant from us, we we are linked to marine ecosystems by rivers.

Dan says, "Here's a challenge: if you walk the Thames Path from Oxford to its end in Woolwich, you will cover 128 miles!"

Dan's Wild 30: Did you know this about great crested newts?

We have a healthy population of great crested newts at the Science Oxford Centre.

At a recent newt survey training session, we learned that the pattern of spots on their bellies is as distinctive as our own fingerprints!

Muntjac encounters a 'wild' squirrel!

Muntjac deer reside in the woodland at Science Oxford Centre. We often hear their characteristic calls early in the morning.

Outdoor Learning Specialist Dan says, "These small, stocky deer divide opinion as they can cause damage to trees and flowers but I like the 'wildness' of their bark, often heard at dawn or dusk."

While we didn't capture their bark on camera, archived footage from cameras in the woodland shows an amusing interaction between a muntjac and a squirrel.

Discover the amazing world of animal senses at Nature Club (27 June, ages 5-9). Identify natural objects in ‘feely bags’ using only your sense of touch, just like worms, moles and woodlice do! Investigate camouflage by hunting for coloured pipecleaner caterpillars – which colours get eaten first and which will survive? Explore outdoors with our expert leader and listen to woodland sounds – identify bird song, hear rustling leaves and go on a sensory scavenger hunt. Taste-test natural tea and make sensory pocket bags filled with herbs and spices to take home.

Nature Club: Animal Senses for ages 5-9 (ticket includes an adult, additional tickets available)
10am, 12.30pm, 3pm
Includes outdoor access all day including Water Lab and woodland trails
Visitor café open
