Here's 7 things you need to consider:
1. Gauge current demand
● How many users do you have and what type - staff, visitors, fleet charging, public charging?
● How will these numbers change going forward? This informs charging speed, access control and location.
2. Assess your site for EV charging readiness
● How many parking spaces do you have? Your bay size and car park design may need adjusting to accommodate larger cars and additional space required for a commercial ev charger installation.
● Determine the maximum demand of your existing electricity supply - will it be exceeded with the electric vehicle charging point installation?
2. Evaluate Location for your Commercial Car Charging Stations
● Identify somewhere prominent, visible and as close to your electricity supply as possible to minimise trenching and cabling costs.
● The ground surface should be smooth, stable, with adequate drainage, GPRS/WiFi, lighting and security camera coverage to ensure accessibility for all users.
● Designated accessible electric vehicle charging station spaces should be included
3. Select the Right Charge Point Type
● Choose single phase 7.4kW, three phase 22kW or DC rapid ev charger.
● Add load balancing to avoid overloading your building's electrical capacity.
● Include pedestals, impact protection, signage and weather-proofing to ensure usability of your chargepoints.
4. Planning Permission
● Installation of ev charging for business in off-street car parks is usually a permitted development
● New street lighting can require planning permission.
6. Evaluate Commercial EV Charging Station Cost and Funding
● The main costs are the commercial car charging stations themselves, the electrical work and any civils and groundworks required to install them. Installation costs can vary widely depending on location and existing infrastructure.
● Account for electricity usage and ongoing annual maintenance costs
● Research government schemes and grants to help with the cost of buying and installing chargepoints for electric vehicles.
7. Operation and maintenance
● Establish a plan for routine checks and unexpected repairs of your ev charging points
● Decide on your pricing model: offer free charging as an employee perk, charge a flat fee, or bill per kWh
