News || Professor Frank Griffel delivers inaugural lecture on philosophy in Islam’s post-classical period

On 26 May 2026, Professor Frank Griffel, Professor of the Study of Abrahamic Religions at the University of Oxford, delivered his inaugural lecture, ‘Double Truth and Multiple Rationalisms: Philosophy in Islam’s Post-Classical Period’.

The lecture examined the rich intellectual traditions of post-classical Islamic philosophy and challenged longstanding assumptions about their historical development.

Sometimes rethinking a field begins with listening to different perspectives...

At the 2026 Ian Ramsey Centre (IRC) Conference, ‘Rethinking Science and Religion 101’, scholars, theologians, scientists, filmmakers, and practitioners from across the world gathered at Oxford to explore new ways of understanding the relationship between science, faith, and knowledge.

Bringing together voices from different cultural and social contexts, the conference created space for conversations around lived experiences, local perspectives, and emerging questions shaping the field today.

The objective was to reflect on how science and religion are taught and discussed, while building connections across communities and disciplines.

News || Oxford University-led research achieves AI breakthrough in transcribing Sanskrit manuscripts

Researchers based in the Faculty of Theology and Religion have achieved a major breakthrough in the automated transcription of Sanskrit manuscripts, marking a significant advance for the study and preservation of South Asia’s textual heritage.

The breakthrough comes from the ‘Creating AI Models for Handwriting and Text Recognition in South Asian Manuscripts’ project, led by Dr Bjarne Wernicke-Olesen and Dr Lucian Wong (Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies). The research team has developed AI models capable of recognising and transcribing handwritten Devanāgarī script with unprecedented accuracy, opening new possibilities for making vast collections of manuscript material digitally accessible to scholars worldwide.
