Not every staircase job is a straight run of steel and glass. Some need a bit more imagination.

This one involved balustrades across four floors of a historic family home in Notting Hill. The owners wanted a bold, contemporary look, pillar box red, with no visible welding anywhere. Simple to say, much harder to deliver on a house full of quirks, including stair treads that varied slightly in height on every level.

So we built an exact physical template of the staircase in our London workshop first. That let us test the design properly and show the client exactly how it would look before a single piece went in.

The main structure came together using slim 42mm tube, with hidden screwheads built in for stability, something that took real care in material choice to get right.

Once the template was built, our installation team had the whole thing up within a week.

Seventy odd years in, and this one's still a firm favourite with the team.

When two staircases have to match exactly, there's no room for guesswork.

This newly built London home called for identical semi-elliptical staircases, right at the centre of the house. The homeowners had put everything into this build and wanted absolute perfection, so we started with a full site survey using our 3D scanner to make sure every measurement was spot on before anything was designed.

The result is a pair of slim mild steel stringers and treads built to support huge curved toughened glass balustrades, along with stainless steel handrails and riser-less stone treads to finish it off.

Our in-house team carried out the whole installation in just a few days, start to finish.

The family living there now say the staircase looks completely different depending on the time of day, light and airy in daylight, and much more striking once evening comes in.

Since 1951 we've been building bespoke staircases like this, and projects like this one are exactly why we still love the job.

Not every staircase job calls for the same solution.

Bespoke steel, helical, straight, floating, they all do a different job. Some are about saving space, some are there to make an entrance, and some just need to fit an awkward layout without looking like an afterthought. The right choice depends on the space and what it needs to do.

We design, fabricate and install all of these ourselves, and we spend a good chunk of our time helping architects and homeowners work out which one actually fits.

One year down for Shams, and what a year it's been. 🎉

He joined us through our Graduate Programme as an Estimating Administrator, and has since worked his way up to Bid & Proposal Coordinator. A promotion he's earned through the effort he's put in.

These days Shams handles our bid and proposal work day to day. Enquiries, quotations, keeping the tracker up to date, and pulling together the numbers that help us make better decisions as a business.

In his own words:

"It's hard to believe it's already been a year since I joined Elite. The Graduate Programme gave me a great opportunity to learn and get stuck in across the business.
