A bent beam goes straight onto the repair list, but a missing ACM safety pin or a load notice that has been torn, faded or knocked off a bay should not be overlooked either.

Before peak season, any damage found on a racking inspection needs fixing before the site gets busier. That can mean replacement components for damaged racking, new mesh decks or anti-collapse mesh where they have been affected, and new signs wherever the old ones can no longer
be read.

If the same uprights or aisle ends keep taking impacts, a repair is also the right time to add racking protection or barriers, so the damage is less likely to recur during the increased traffic of a high-demand period.

An extension adds capacity, but the new bays only work well when they match the site they are joining.

That means racking that lines up with the existing runs, mesh decks and anti-collapse mesh to the same standard as the bays alongside them, and protection at the end of each new aisle where vehicles turn. The new aisles will also need their own location labels, aisle markers and load notices, so operatives can find stock and see what each bay is rated for.

When each of those parts comes from a different supplier, a simple extension can turn into several quotes, several lead times and several deliveries to plan around your client's site.

A reconfiguration before the peak season usually comes down to one of two goals: getting more storage out of the same building, or making the site run more efficiently.

That might mean adding beam levels or reworking aisles to create more pallet locations, or moving fast-moving lines closer to dispatch and setting up a dedicated pick area.

Whether you have planned the new layout with your client or are delivering a plan they have already made, the work rarely stops at the racking. Moved beam levels can leave mesh decks that no longer fit the altered bays, a new pick area needs shelving that keeps fast-moving lines within easy reach, and re-zoning means new boundaries around the changed areas. New walkways create traffic routes that need protecting, and every change needs signage that matches the layout people will work in.

Falling stock and a collapsing bay are two risks a site must design against, and it matters even more where people work alongside automated equipment.

How much of your client's automated zone is actually enclosed, and how much is just assumed to be off-limits?

Protection, segregation and signage rarely come from the same supplier, but on an automated site they need to work as one.

As QTS has grown, we can now offer you all three (and more) as a cohesive solution from one place.

Protection starts at the points where different types of traffic meet: crossing points, transfer stations, charging areas and the ends of aisles, where impact protection and racking protection absorb what a forklift or AGV would otherwise pass straight through to the structure or the person nearby.

On an automated site, forklifts, AGVs, and pedestrians often share the same floor space, especially at crossing points, transfer stations, and aisle ends.
