Oak glazed doors fitted for a client recently. While I don’t undertake carpentry work as often these days, the end result was well worth the time and effort put into completing this project.

We recently completed an 11 way fuse-board upgrade. The last board this client had installed looked safe on the outside but was a fire risk waiting to happen. Incorrectly modified and unsecured Busbar coupled with incorrect sized RCBOs and MCBs. It was not picked up when they had the property inspected. Please make sure you are employing a qualified electrician or electrically competent person to inspect your electrics.

Included in all our board upgrades are an SPD as standard (protects your electronics during a surge) and fire suppression strip (this is hidden inside behind the cover)

Whilst a fire suppression strip isn’t mandatory and a new fuseboard will very unlikely go wrong. For a very small difference in price and peace of mind it’s a no brainer.

Do you regularly switch your shower isolator off to “save electricity” or feel it getting warm?

We recently attended a fault involving a shower that stopped working. Upon arriving at the property we carried out a visual inspection, we realised the shower isolation switch had burnt out. We believe it likely to either be because whoever installed it originally did not tighten the connections properly or over switching. The client mentioned they regularly switch the shower on and off via the isolator.

However did you know that a shower switch is only for use as a point of isolation for cleaning and maintenance/repalcing of the shower?

It is also unlikely that switching it off will save much electricity.

This is beacuse the general intended use is as an isolator not as an on/off switch like a light switch is used for. Frequent on/off switching can wear down the switch's internal mechanisms or other parts. Typically a shower only uses electricity when in use. However sometimes it is recommended turning things such as shower circuits etc off when going on holiday. We always recommend following manufacturer’s instructions. Sometimes things can normally be warm to the touch but,

Things to look out for are
A fishy burning smell
Black marks around switches

These are usually an indicator of thermal damage or plastic melting.
