A behind-the-scenes look at the 3D structural model for the refurbishment of The Vine Hotel, a historic pub in Plymouth for the Victualling Office Tavern.

Brody Forbes led the structural design and detailing for this complex transformation, which included the removal of load-bearing walls, the addition of a new second floor, and the installation of a completely new roof structure.

Working closely with a local steel fabricator, the steelwork was meticulously detailed offsite, enabling a smooth and efficient installation on site. Projects like this highlight the value of collaboration, careful planning, and detailed 3D modelling in delivering successful refurbishment projects.

Environmental Sustainability Project – Cobham Hall

As part of the environmental sustainability programme at Cobham Hall, the reserve collection store at Royal Naval Museums: Naval Aviation (Fleet Air Arm Museum), Brody Forbes completed a structural assessment of the west roof elevation in 2023 to determine its load-bearing capacity ahead of the installation of 430 solar panels.

In 2025, a similar assessment was undertaken on the east roof elevation, enabling the Museum to explore opportunities for a future expansion of its solar photovoltaic installation.

The initial work was undertaken to assess the roof structure while also taking into account the specification of the proposed solar panels. This enabled the Museum to work with its chosen supplier to determine the most appropriate number, layout and configuration of panels for the building.

Brody Forbes worked closely with the project team throughout the design process, providing valuable technical advice and support.

Sometimes the biggest challenges on site aren't the job itself—they're the unexpected setbacks.

Working on a remote project, we were let down at a critical stage by a supplier. We were left one machine short on delivery, and another arrived not even commissioned, putting significant pressure on our programme!

Brody Forbes carried out a 2 yearly inspection of a steel and GRP hybrid tower, originally strengthened as part of the project Marshall in 2017. The inspection involved carrying out tension testing of the guyed cables using a digital tension meter.

Brody Forbes were appointed by The Box Plymouth to act as advisers for the installation of The Hop by Jyll Bradley in Tavistock Place in 2025.
The commission involved reviewing existing records and providing specialist advice on critical safety considerations during the er****on of the artwork and throughout its installation period.
