On this project, restricted access along a riverside location meant the team needed a safe and practical way to lift and position infrastructure components.

Working alongside Octavius Infrastructure and the Area 4 Highways team, our operators used the Merlo Roto to complete the work safely and efficiently, helping minimise disruption while maintaining progress on site.

Some of the most important decisions in tree work are made before the first cut.

Every site brings different risks. Access may be restricted. Traffic may be moving nearby. Power lines, railways, waterways or telecommunications equipment may need to remain operational throughout the work.

A safe approach starts with:

• Understanding the site
• Identifying what could go wrong

• Establishing clear working areas

Not every infrastructure project involves vegetation management.

Our teams were recently supporting Octavius Infrastructure on a riverside project where limited access made lifting and positioning materials particularly challenging.

Using our Merlo Roto, we were able to place infrastructure components safely and accurately without the need for more complex lifting arrangements. The result was a safer, more efficient way of delivering the work while keeping the project moving.

Having the right equipment is important, but knowing when and how to use it is what really makes the difference.

Utility arboriculture is about keeping essential infrastructure safe, accessible and operational.

Vegetation around electricity networks, railways, highways, waterways and telecommunications sites can create risks long before a tree falls.

Branches can obstruct access, interfere with equipment, reduce visibility or place pressure on already vulnerable infrastructure.

This is why effective vegetation management is planned, ongoing work. It combines tree knowledge with an understanding of how each network operates and what is needed to protect it.

The aim is not simply to remove vegetation. It is to manage it responsibly before it becomes a larger problem.

A machine is only valuable if it makes the work safer and more controlled.

Our and grapple saw allow teams to remove sections of hazardous trees from a protected cab, reducing the need for climbing and limiting the time employees spend exposed to roads or unstable timber.

It can also help us:

• Reach difficult areas
• Control each section during removal
• Reduce manual handling
• Complete work with less disruption
• Respond safely to complex site conditions

Specialist equipment does not replace experience. It gives experienced teams better options.

When a damaged or unstable tree presents an immediate risk, cutting it down is only one part of the response.

Before work begins, the team must assess:

• Who or what could be affected
• Whether roads, buildings or utilities are at risk
• How the area can be secured
• Which equipment will provide the safest access
• How disruption can be kept to a minimum

Conditions can change quickly, particularly around roads, utilities and public spaces. A controlled response relies on experienced people making the right decisions in the right order.

That planning is often what turns a difficult situation into a safe and successful job.
