What does 37 years in the IP profession teach you about innovation, change and staying curious?
In the latest Meet the IP Professional, we speak with Robert Wulff, Principal and Patent Attorney at Griffith Hack, about a career that began with chemical engineering and has taken him across an extraordinary range of technologies.

Robert reflects on how the profession has evolved from fax machines to AI, why effective IP strategy starts with understanding the business, and why he believes there will always be a role for skilled and experienced patent attorneys.

He also shares an important lesson from almost four decades in IP:

“Remain open to be surprised and preserve a sense of wonder.”

Read Robert’s story and discover why curiosity, listening and a willingness to keep learning remain central to the way he works.

Every legal opinion starts with evidence.
Patent attorneys make important decisions every day, helping clients understand risk, protect innovation and plan their next move. Behind those decisions is one essential ingredient: reliable patent searching.

At PatWorld, we support attorneys with comprehensive searches and carefully considered analysis, providing a strong foundation for informed advice.
We're proud to work alongside IP professionals, helping them deliver the confidence their clients rely on.

Because great legal advice starts with great evidence.

Hidden Hormone Spikes Could Be the Key to a Missed Cause of High Blood Pressure
A wearable device that tracks hormone levels around the clock is revealing something doctors have long struggled to catch: 'primary aldosteronism', a hormone disorder affecting up to one in five people with high blood pressure, and one that sharply raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Developed at the University of Bristol, the device detected irregular hormone bursts occurring both day and night in patients with the condition, spikes that standard blood tests routinely miss. The hope: earlier diagnosis, and better outcomes for millions.

A common but often overlooked cause of high blood pressure may be hiding in plain sight—and data from a pioneering wearable device could hold the key to its earlier diagnosis, according to new research.

When you're researching a technology, where do you look for information?

Journals, academic papers and online research may be the obvious starting points. But patent literature can provide another valuable source of technical information.
The challenge is knowing how to find what's relevant.

Our Introduction to Patent Searching course provides a practical introduction to searching patent information, helping you understand how to develop keywords, use classifications, refine a search and make sense of the results you find.

We use the freely available Espacenet database for practical examples, but the search methodology and techniques you learn can be applied across other patent databases.

The course could be particularly valuable for researchers, R&D teams, innovation professionals, technology transfer teams and others whose role involves investigating technologies or understanding developments in a particular field.

Around 7 hours of content, self-paced and with unlimited access, so you can fit the learning around your work.

If patent information could add another dimension to your research, take a look at what's included:

PFAS screening just got a serious upgrade.
Salvus has launched a portable, three-module system that lets field teams test for PFAS right at the point of concern, no lab wait required. Up to 7 samples per shift. Results in hours, not weeks. Detects down to 500 ppt.

That's the kind of speed that changes how decisions get made on-site.

What does the patent process look like from the examiner’s side?
In our latest Meet the IP Professional, we speak to former USPTO Patent Examiner Mary Maille (Molly) Lyons, whose route into intellectual property was anything but planned.

After a career in science, research and education, Maille joined the USPTO knowing little about patent examination. She went on to spend 14 years there, developing an insider’s understanding of how examiners approach applications and the importance of clear communication throughout the process.

Now, through her consultancy SeaLyons LLC, Maille is using that experience to help others better understand and navigate the US patent system.

We talk about her unexpected route into IP, what makes an examiner’s perspective so valuable, why the relationship between examiner and applicant needn’t be adversarial – and her plans to combine consultancy work with life aboard a sailboat.

Read Meet the IP Professional: Maille Lyons – Seeing Patents from the Other Side: https://cstu.io/9c9695/

Former USPTO patent examiner Maille Lyons shares insights from 14 years of patent examination and how that experience now shapes her IP consultancy.

China has achieved a significant breakthrough in renewable energy with the successful full-process flight test of the S4000 Stratosphere Airborne Wind Energy System (SAWES), a megawatt-level, helium-buoyant airship turbine capable of harvesting electricity from the sky.

Developed by Beijing-based Linyi Yunchuan Energy Technology, the S4000 is the latest in a series of progressively advanced airborne wind platforms. It is a direct upgrade to the S2000, which made history in January 2026 as the world's first grid-connected airborne wind turbine.

The S4000 reaches a maximum operating altitude of 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), double that of its predecessor, where winds are stronger, steadier, and far more energy-dense than at ground level.

The S4000 isn't just an engineering milestone, it signals that the era of harvesting clean energy from high-altitude winds is moving from ambition to reality.

The S4000 test provides a larger platform for developing airborne wind power beyond the earlier S2000 system.

Lasers are now doing maintenance inside nuclear plants, and the results are genuinely impressive.

University of South Florida engineers spent four years building a custom laser de-icing system, and it just passed real-world tests at two Tennessee Valley Authority nuclear facilities. The challenge it solves: thousands of borated-ice baskets inside nuclear reactors can freeze together over time, making individual safety inspections nearly impossible without tedious, manual intervention.

The laser operates more than 40 feet below the surface, threading through tight spaces to slice through frozen bonds between baskets, without fully melting the ice and creating a whole new water-management problem. It clears several feet of ice buildup in just minutes, a task that previously consumed significant maintenance hours.

What makes this especially notable is how it was built: mechanical engineering, electrical systems, optics, controls, and strict nuclear safety compliance, all packed into one device with hundreds of components, designed to run flawlessly without the engineers present.

Less downtime. Safer inspections. Smarter infrastructure.

USF engineers have developed a precision laser system that can cut through frozen connections between nuclear reactor ice baskets in minutes.

Do you use patent information as part of your research?
Patent literature can be a valuable source of technical information, but knowing where to start, and how to search effectively, isn't always straightforward if patent searching isn't your main role.

Our Introduction to Patent Searching course is designed to help researchers and other professionals develop a structured approach to searching patent information.

Using the freely available Espacenet database for practical examples, the course covers the principles and techniques behind effective patent searching. Importantly, the skills you develop are transferable to other patent search databases too.

With 7 hours of content, you can work through the course at your own pace and revisit the material whenever you need it.

It could be particularly useful for those working in research, R&D, innovation, technology transfer or knowledge exchange who want to make better use of patent information in their work.

Could it help you, or someone in your research team?
