Telecom Plus were named PLC of the Year at the annual PLC awards in 2009, Best Telecommunications PLC at the Stock Exchange Awards in 2011, and have received many other awards and endorsements from consumer organisations and in the press. The Company was founded in 1996 as a telecommunications business. Its first product, launched in 1997, was a least cost call routing 'Smart Box', a gadget that plugs into a phone socket and then routes the calls to alternative networks at a cheaper rate than British Telecom. Trading as The Utility Warehouse, Telecom Plus has no shops and does not advertise on television or in the national press. The entire operation (including call centres) is based in North London, with around 700 staff. The company operates a full landline telephony service, mobile telephony (piggybacked on the T-Mobile & Orange UK network), broadband, gas and electricity (the company is licensed by OFGEM), and a CashBack card (a pre-paid MasterCard). Telecom Plus Plc currently has a 20% share in UK business power supplier Opus Energy. The Company currently has between 1.5 and 2% of the UK utilities market, with an ever expanding, enthusiastic team of independent distributors who are amply rewarded for results (and who therefore deliver the goods). The CEO, Andrew Lindsay MBE believes that 15% of the UK market is achievable. The company has secured a 20 year energy deal which enables it to be both more competitive and more profitable.
