Update on Port Talbot operations

14:30 Friday June 5 2026

Following the incident at the Pickle Line on Wednesday evening, work is now underway to carry out a full assessment of the area affected.

During the incident, the Hot Strip Mill was temporarily taken offline. Teams are working towards a planned restart in the middle of next week.

Our Supply Chain teams are actively implementing mitigation plans, including alternative processing at the Llanwern Cold Mill and Pickle Line.

These actions are focused on maintaining continuity of supply and supporting our customers during this period.

Our priority remains the safety of our people and the safe, stable operation of our assets. We will continue to provide updates as further information becomes available.

We would like to thank our employees and the emergency services for their swift and professional response.

Incident update: Port Talbot steelworks

Mid and West Wales Fire Service remain on the Port Talbot site and retain control of the area of the Cold Mill where the fire took place last night.

Mid and West Wales Fire Service remain on the Port Talbot site and retain control of the area of the Cold Mill where the fire took place last night.

We are therefore currently unable to assess the cause of the fire, the scale of the damage or the potential impact on operations.

Nevertheless, the company is investigating a number of options in order to minimise the potential impact on its downstream businesses and external customers.

A company spokesperson has confirmed that the fire was restricted to a confined area, and that while the site’s Hot Rolling Mill was paused as a precaution, it was unaffected and is expected to re-start production shortly.

Perfecting the package. Preparing for the future.

As Tata Steel UK's transition progresses, Trostre is helping prepare for the future of low-carbon packaging steel.

The site has already supported trials using packaging steels made from simulated Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) products, helping demonstrate that lower-carbon steel can deliver the quality and performance customers expect.

As featured in The Canmaker, James Davies, Works Manager at Trostre, said:

"Customers increasingly expect this kind of sustainability from their suppliers. We're not just responding to market pressure, we're helping set the direction."

We're proud of the people whose expertise, innovation and commitment are helping shape the future of steel packaging.

Incident update: Port Talbot steelworks

Mid and West Wales Fire Service attended the Port Talbot site last night at around 8pm to deal with a fire at one of the site’s processing lines. All personnel were accounted for and evacuated from the area safely.

08:00 Thursday 4 June 2026

At this time, the emergency services remain on site and are working with local teams to completely extinguish the fire.

The incident is not related to the safe and successful demolition of the empty, redundant Gas Holder earlier yesterday evening.

We would like to thank local site teams and the emergency services for their prompt and professional action.

Further updates will be shared as information becomes available.

Loud noise from Port Talbot steelworks 18:30 Wednesday 3 June

People working and living in the Port Talbot area may have just heard a loud noise emanating from the Port Talbot steelworks.

This was the result of the planned demolition of the empty, redundant Coke Ovens Gas Holder, which has been completed safely as part of the ongoing engineering works on the site. The gas holder ceased operation with the closure of the site’s heavy-end in September 2024.

This demolition was required to make space for future raw materials handling areas for the new 3 million tonne per year capacity Electric Arc Furnace.

Our thanks goes to the whole team involved from Tata Steel and our contractor partners Thompson of Prudhoe and PDC, in what was a complex programme of work.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
