The team at our Edinburgh facility were delighted to welcome local post-primary school students recently for a STEM Day.

The day included a range of hands-on activities, from a strawberry DNA extraction experiment to a ‘crack the code’ codon wheel challenge, giving students valuable insight into what a career in science at Almac can look like.

Students also explored STEM career pathways and saw how science and technology can be used to address real-world challenges.

A big thank you to everyone involved in delivering such an inspiring day!

Frances Weldon, Associate Director - STEM Outreach, recently did a workshop at Mercy College Belfast, as part of a Targeted Intervention Programme for Year 10 students to spark interest in STEM pathways.

During the session, students learned more about the work we do at Almac and gained insight into the wide range of roles available both inside and outside the laboratory. As part of an interactive session, students stepped into the role of laboratory scientists and extracted DNA from strawberries.

Initiatives like this are key to helping young people connect classroom learning with future careers and build confidence in their choices.

🔬 Inspiring the next generation of scientists!

Almac’s Outreach Associate, Caroline McGeown and Stephen Joyce, STEM Outreach Associate recently visited Kilrea Primary School to give Primary 7 pupils from Kilrea Primary School and St. Columba's Primary School, Kilrea an insight into science at Almac.

During this shared education visit, pupils enjoyed demonstrations of pH colour‑changing and acid–base reaction experiments, followed by hands‑on activities including paper chromatography, a crack‑the‑code codon wheel challenge, and a bridge‑building exercise.

The session highlighted how science, problem‑solving, critical thinking and teamwork are applied in real‑world STEM careers at Almac.

Great to see so much enthusiasm for STEM! 🚀👩‍🔬👨‍🔬

We were proud to support a recent ‘We Discover Industry’ event in Loughborough, helping inspire girls from nine local schools to build confidence, career readiness and employability.

Over three days, Almac colleagues - alongside the Leicester & Leicestershire Careers Hub, the Merck Curiosity Cube and campus partners - delivered interactive, hands-on workshops for 300 Year 8 pupils, bringing STEM to life and connecting classroom learning to real-world workplace skills.

Huge thanks to our employees in Charnwood, Loughborough who helped make this event such a success!

Almac’s Outreach team was delighted to host a visit by GCSE and GCE Chemistry teachers in collaboration with CCEA on 24 March.

The visit provided a valuable insight into the application of chemistry in drug development and pharmaceutical manufacture, through guided tours of laboratories and API manufacturing facilities, as well as presentations on Chemical Engineering, Green Chemistry and Applied Science (Analytical) Higher Level Apprenticeships.

Through activities like this, Almac’s Outreach programme continues to strengthen links between education and industry by connecting classroom learning with real world application and careers in the pharmaceutical sector.
