⚠️ Dangerous Boiler Found During Routine Service
We recently attended a customer’s property to carry out a routine boiler service. On removing the boiler casing, we immediately noticed an unusual smell coming from inside the appliance.
Further inspection revealed a hole had developed within the boiler due to excessive heat from the burner over time. This damage was allowing products of combustion to escape from areas where they should have been safely contained and discharged through the flue system.
The customer told us they had been noticing a strange smell for several weeks but weren’t aware of the potential danger.
Following our inspection and safety checks, the boiler was deemed unsafe and had to be condemned and isolated from use. Unfortunately, the damage was beyond economical repair, and the safest option was to replace the appliance.
We subsequently installed a new boiler, restoring the customer’s heating and hot water and, most importantly, ensuring the property was safe.
This is a perfect example of why annual boiler servicing is so important. Boilers can develop serious faults internally while still appearing to operate normally. Regular servicing allows these faults to be identified before they become a danger to you and your family.
Remember, carbon monoxide is colourless, tasteless and odourless. Although the customer noticed a strange smell, carbon monoxide itself cannot be detected by human senses. Never ignore unusual smells, noises or changes in your boiler’s operation.
