Operating transmission towers that are 60+ years old is safe, but it requires a significant amount of maintenance.

Transmission towers constructed way back in the 1950s and 1960s have performed brilliantly. Many have exceeded expectations, with the repair and replacement of key components extending their operational lives.

As the need to modernise and expand the grid becomes more urgent in response to increasing demand, it's vital that we continue to get the most out of this existing infrastructure.

Transmission towers nearing the end of their design lives require frequent and costly site visits to assess their condition and structural integrity.

At present, a finite workforce maintains these ageing assets, so remote monitoring can fill a major gap by providing a view of asset health around the clock. Whereas a site visit offers only a snapshot in time, Cyclops’ Remote Monitoring platform continually reports back 24/7 via custom dashboards, featuring real-time tension, ambient temperature and wind speed, as well as user defined thresholds and alarms. This enables operators to carry out highly targeted predictive maintenance, only as and when required.

If remote monitoring can reduce the burden of asset management and help streamline operators' maintenance strategies, engineering teams can focus their attention where it's needed most: expanding and building a resilient grid fit for increasing demand and our net zero ambitions.

The rail industry is under significant pressure to modernise while managing funding constraints.

Cyclops Utilities' remote load monitoring platform addresses both challenges by providing continuous visibility of asset condition, enabling industry leaders to make more informed maintenance and investment decisions.

It delivers cost savings by increasing the efficiency of maintenance operations, reducing the need for site visits, and supporting a proactive asset management strategy that maximises the performance, lifespan, and value of existing infrastructure.

At Cyclops, we are problem solvers. We design and build bespoke hardware and software solutions around the real-world challenges our customers face in managing critical assets.

We believe that remote load monitoring has a key role to play in the asset management strategies that will take the rail industry forward.

Speak to us at Rail LIVE about your asset management needs, and together we can explore how load monitoring can support the future of rail.

Our CEO Ian Howarth, Sales Manager Barry Chapman, and Account Manager Graham O'Connor will be demonstrating our new remote monitoring platform alongside our distribution partners, Horizon Utility Supplies Ltd, on Stand J44, 17–18 June.

W̶o̶r̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ Walking at height.

Slack line world record holder Jaan Roose knows a thing or two about heights. He trusts Cyclops sensors to monitor the tension in his slackline setups.

Whether it's working at extreme heights, under high loads, high winds, or where accuracy is highly critical, our clients trust Cyclops data to manage their assets, so they can focus on the job in hand.

Presenting data and providing alerts via intuitive custom software platforms engineered around the user, we empower all sorts of customers to measure and manage their infrastructure, whether they’re monitoring one critical line on-site or remotely monitoring a complex network on a national scale.

The decentralisation of electricity in the UK grid.

It's an evolving story that's about to take another turn.

In 2020, fossil fuels made up 84% of the global energy mix, but this figure will need to fall to less than 20% by 2050 in order to reach net zero. (National Grid)

But the UK grid is decades old and was built for a handful of massive coal and gas power stations, not to handle the complex energy mix emerging, led by wind and solar, often coming from remote locations.

At the same time, demand is set to surge. It’s estimated that electricity consumption in the UK and US will increase by approximately 50% by 2036 and more than double by 2050. (National Grid)

A lot of work is being done to expand and modernise our network to make it fit for the future. This includes upgrading physical infrastructure. But to achieve our targets we need to increase production efficiency four-fold.

We need a smarter approach to constructing new infrastructure and to maintaining our existing network – targeting critical expansion and getting the most out of the infrastructure we have.

Digital asset management is a key part of this future. Using Cyclops Utilities technology provides precise data which enables a predictive approach, identifying where development and maintenance are most urgent, and where they’re not.

Remote monitoring can maximise efficiency and cost effectiveness – supporting our workforce with a viable path into the future.

In 2026, resilience is a core KPI.

And it's not just cybersecurity – but across physical infrastructure, and every element of the complex networks that keep society running.

Because systems are operating under increasing stress from climate pressure, cyber risk, ageing assets etc.

At the same time, expectations are rising. Networks are expected to be infallible. Demand is continually increasing.

Growth will always be a key metric. But lessons have been learned from growth at the expense of resilience.

Scaling infrastructure, expanding networks, increasing capacity – it only works if those systems can withstand stress, adapt in real time, and recover quickly when something goes wrong.

That’s why resilience is no longer a background concern. It’s being measured, tracked, and prioritised alongside performance, cost, and efficiency.

We're proud to be part of that movement.

Cell towers power our increasingly mobile, connected world.

Yet maintaining them often relies on engineers visiting sites just to sanity-check structural integrity.

21st-century network. 20th-century asset management.

Cyclops is changing that.

Through a custom cloud-based remote monitoring platform, operators can track the tension of supporting cables in real time, detecting early signs of fatigue, and predicting failures before they happen. Site visits stay efficient and targeted towards sites that need attention.

A single ChatGPT query consumes about 10 times the electricity of a standard Google search.

By the end of 2026, global data centres are projected to consume more than 1,000 TWh – roughly equivalent to the total annual energy consumption of Japan.

Globally, electricity infrastructure is ageing. When you plug "The Future" (AI) into "The Past" (50-year-old grid components), the margin for error disappears.

If servers go down due to power failure, the "knock-on" effect isn't just a slow website – it’s a disruption to the digital backbone of our economy.

So, is our growing dependence on AI manageable?

We believe you can’t manage what you can’t measure. As grids reach their limits, predictive maintenance is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity.

You can't modernise an entire grid overnight.

But you can modernise how you monitor, repair and fortify it for the future.

Cyclops remote monitoring provides future-proof asset management:
✅ Monitoring all key infrastructure via a single dashboard.
✅ Preventing downtime before it happens.
✅ Using custom dashboards, smart enough for the AI age.

The ocean is an unforgiving proving ground.

Long before we brought compact load monitoring to asset management for critical infrastructure, we were helping customers navigate the world’s most feared oceans at mind-bending speeds.

In January, Cyclops sensors helped Sodebo Ultim 3 complete the fastest non-stop crewed circumnavigation of the globe in 40 days, 10 hours, 45 minutes and 50 seconds.

Last year, Charlie Dalin shattered the single-handed monohull round-the-world record using six Cyclops load pins.

Our sensors have travelled around the world countless times — often fitted at the front of the boat, exposed to high winds, rough seas, sub-zero temperatures and saline water. Our customers trust them to monitor critical equipment in situations where failure could be disastrous.

Alone in the middle of the ocean, sometimes more than a thousand miles from civilisation, a sailor’s assets are everything.

Providing valuable data in remote, challenging, high-stakes environments is part of our DNA. It’s built into every piece of Cyclops technology now used in industrial settings, where robustness and dependability are essential.
