The reality of keeping machines moving in the scrap industry… 🔧
Would we love to have unlimited downtime to put every single machine we look after back to perfect health? Absolutely.
But in scrap, that simply isn’t the reality.
We look after multiple branches across the UK, with multiple machines on each site, machines that are working, earning and often simply don’t get the luxury of downtime.
A huge part of what we do is reactive. We get the call because something needs doing, we turn up, and we work with the time and access we’re given to get that machine sorted and back to work.
Sometimes we get a full day with a machine.
Sometimes we get a couple of hours.
Sometimes we’re working on engines that are still hot from graft because they’ve only just stopped…and they need to be back up and running ASAP.
And yes, sometimes multiple machines need doing in a day.
That doesn’t mean corners have been cut.
We don’t dictate to our customers how long we need their machines for. We do what is asked of us, within the downtime we’re given, and we do it to the best standard possible in the time available.
We inspect, service, identify and report what needs attention. We advise the customer and work with them to prioritise what needs doing and when.
Would we love every machine cold, clean, parked up and available for as long as we wanted? Of course.
But that’s not the reality of scrap.
We get the call. We turn up. We work around their operation. And we get it done. 🔧
Because their operation doesn’t work around us, we work around them.
As Tony Beets puts it:
“You cannot put a price on downtime.”
And in this industry, that pretty much says it all.
