This year, it seems that lots of people have their tree up already, or are thinking about putting it up in the next week or so. Christmas trees can impose a real fire risk in the home, but hopefully, these tips will help you keep fire safe this festive period:
π Choose an artificial tree over a real tree if you can, but make sure itβs labelled as fire resistant
π If you do get a real tree, check that itβs fresh by seeing if it has green needles that donβt fall out easily and a sticky trunk
π Cut off the bottom two inches of a real Christmas tree, and allow it to absorb water for 24 hours before bringing it inside. Then water daily
π Keep your tree a minimum of 3ft away from any heat sources - did you know that 1 in 6 Christmas tree fires are started when the tree is too close to a heat source?
π Donβt place your tree in a position that blocks an exit
π Carefully inspect lights and extension chords - if they are damaged in any way then do not use
π Donβt overload your extension chords either!
π Check your lights conform to British Standard BS EN 60598
π Turn your lights off when youβre away from home and at night
π Dispose of your real Christmas tree within 2 weeks (or sooner if dry) - place it outside if your home until you can recycle!
