With the advent of multiple fuel grades entering the UK market, there is an increased risk of misfuelling when it comes to fuel ordering and delivery into client storage tanks. The demand for commercial fuel tank cleaning is therefore also on the rise.

At DP Fuel Tank Services, we are seeing a marked increase in the frequency of the wrong fuel grades being delivered to sites or deliveries being made into the incorrect storage tanks.

Not going back too far in time, managing fuel stocks was a much easier proposition when the choice was simply petrol or diesel. However, due to the Renewable Energy Directive, several alternative fuels are now being offered, including biodiesel and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

While these greener fuels are vital for the industry, they have caused managers to reconsider how they store multiple fuel grades. Specifically, there is a new focus on efficient storage and how to maintain fuel hygiene, given the propensity of modern bio-blended fuels to absorb moisture.

As a result of these changes, fuel conditioning and polishing have become a planned, ongoing maintenance requirement. Previously, this was often just a reactive response to a problem.

Moisture absorption in modern fuels can lead to bacterial growth. Therefore, tank cleaning has also become an in-demand service. Clearly, hygiene doesn’t just include conditioning the fuel itself, but extends to the environment in which the fuel is stored.

Every so often DP Fuel Tank Services Ltd are requested to perform works overseas.

One such recent project involved mobilising a team to attend site in Berlin, Germany. We were only given a little over a week to arrange the necessary transport and logistics and arrive ready for action in Berlin. This presented several challenges, chief amongst these being logistics and custom requirements for transporting our equipment to Berlin, and subsequent return to the UK. Even though we were not exporting goods per se, we still had to follow rigorous formalities including ATA Carnet submissions and other shipping protocols.

A curtain-sided HGV was contracted and arrived at our Redhill facility where we loaded an extensive array of plant and equipment aboard for the long journey over to Berlin. The following day the team flew to Berlin to meet the client's site personnel ready for the tank cleaning operation to commence the following day.

The following morning the HGV arrived with our equipment onboard which was promptly unloaded and readied for work. We pumped-out remaining fuel into temporary storage, internally cleaned and degassed a basement fuel storage tank serving the site's standby power generation, and the fuel returned via fuel polishing equipment and fuel quality samples obtained. The project was performed without any significant issues and the client was extremely pleased with our prompt and professional conduct.

This was a steep learning curve for us having never previously operated in Germany. With this experience under our belt, we feel confident that future European projects would be straightforward. Previous overseas projects have included the Falkland Islands, Jordan, Ireland, and the Channel Islands.

Working Safely with Low Flashpoint Fuels

Petrol and Spirits require special consideration when going about cleaning or decommissioning tanks in which these products are stored.

Highly flammable products can inadvertently be ignited with dire consequences. This is why many firms offering tank cleaning and decommissioning services will not touch highly volatile fuels such as petrol. Diesel and other ‘oil based grades’ generally do not readily ignite unless the fuel is atomised first. Therefore, diesel engines work on the principle of compression ignition, whereas petrol engines only require a spark to combust.

Throughout our 60 years in the industry, we have always provided services for volatile fuel grades. We therefore have developed skills and procedures to safely deal with flammable materials. We have developed Nitro-foam Inerting, a process where we use Nitrogen gas combined with a detergent-based foam as a method of temporarily inerting petrol tanks. Water backfilling is also a good solution for inerting tanks, although this does create significant volumes of contaminated waste water.

Confined-spaces manned entry also requires special consideration when dealing with low-flash fuels. Highly flammable vapours can easily be generated in a short amount of time, and therefore de-gassing and forced ventilation must be maintained and monitored throughout.
