BLOG – How much carbon do we need to remove each year to hit climate targets?

A recent report from State of Carbon Dioxide Removal found that we need to remove at least 7 billion tonnes of CO2 every year by 2050 in order to meet the 1.5°c Paris Agreement target. Oxford University states that only 2 billion tonnes are currently being removed annually through Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR).

Ethical Power has signed performance monitoring contract with Lodestone Energy for projects in New Zealand.

This contract is for the monitoring of Kaitaia and Edgecumbe, 33MW each. As Lodestone increases its renewable asset portfolio, Ethical Power’s team will take on another three solar parks under the same contract. Ethical Power’s team in Devon will soon be remotely monitoring performance of five solar farms in New Zealand.

Hive Ecosystems update… 🌱

Hive Ecosystems, part of the Hive Group, has been working to restore parcels of land in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The land was degraded by overgrazing livestock, and Ecosystems aim to revive the land and restore diversity by planting millions of spekboom cuttings.

Ed Hawkins, a climate scientist at the University of Reading, started a movement called ‘Show Your Stripes’ in 2018.

This initiative aims to visualise the increasing global temperatures due to climate change and the damaging impact of human activities on the planet. Show Your Stripes Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of climate change and the rapidly changing temperature across the globe.

2023 was the hottest year on record, and 2024 has already seen five consecutive months of record heat. In order to reflect the significant heat we experienced last year, the Show Your Stripes 2023 stripe was coloured in a new shade of red.

Hive has secured 185 hectares of land in Croatia to develop 130 MW solar project.

We have now secured land for our fifth project in the region. Having secured the land, we are in a position to commence Energy Approval, EIA and the grid connection process. Located in Karlovac County, the project will be one of the largest in our pipeline at 185 hectares and 130 MWp capacity.

We have received positive EIA decisions for our first four solar/BESS projects in Türkiye! 🇹🇷

The four projects have a total solar PV capacity of more than 265 MWp. The projects, Bala 1 (74 MW), Bala 2 (55 MW), Elmadağ 1 (81 MW), and Sivrihisar 1 (55 MW) are located in central Türkiye and will all be developed with accompanying BESS at approximately a 1:1 solar PV:BESS ratio.

Adding BESS alongside the solar elements will mean energy can be retained and stored for use at times when the panels are not conducting power, meaning a more secure and continuous source of electricity for the region.

Hive Hydrogen South Africa has confirmed 1230 MW Crossroads Green Energy Solar Project Development to power Coega green ammonia.

The group of nine solar PV projects, situated in the very high solar yield De Aar area in South Africa, will now commence with the next stage of the grid connection workstream.

Hive’s $5.8bn (R105bn) green ammonia project, Coega, will produce over 1 million tons a year and is a flagship investment project awarded Strategic Integrated Project Status by the Ministry of Public Works in November 2022.

CuanTec begins Chitosan production at its manufacturing facility in Glenrothes, Scotland.

CuanTec has been perfecting the process to successfully extract Chitin, the naturally-occurring structural biopolymer contained in crustacean shell, and to then convert into Chitosan. It will be sold as an ambient storable dry powder to customers across industries and applications such as biomedical devices, dental, veterinary, agriculture, water purification, cosmetics and university research as a valuable ingredient with unique properties.
