The University of Sheffield AMRC Tomorrow. Done Better. The AMRC is a partner in the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, backed by the Technology Strategy Board.



The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is dedicated to working with manufacturing businesses, from global aerospace giants to local SMEs. We work with around 90 member companies which pay an annual membership fee to access our resources and expertise, and which help determine our research programme. Research projects fall into three categories:
Gene

ric research carried out on behalf of the AMRC partnership, with results distributed to all partners. Generic projects are agreed by the board of members, and results are shared between all members. Specific research for individual partners. The partner invests directly in the research and has exclusive access to any resulting intellectual property. Innovative projects carried out on behalf of the partnership, with results presented to all partners. These projects are usually funded by EPSRC, the European Framework Programme, or other external body, and may involve collaboration with external research and industrial partners. The AMRC now employs around 600 highly qualified researchers and engineers from around the globe, in a purpose-built centre on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in South Yorkshire. The AMRC group also includes our sister centre, the Nuclear AMRC; the AMRC Training Centre; and shared resources such as the Knowledge Transfer Centre. High-temperature industries are traditionally the hardest to decarbonise.

To solve this, the AMRC has secured £1m funding to establish HyDecarb – a first-of-its-kind, open-access research capability to de-risk hydrogen fuel switching for manufacturers.

For sectors like steel, glass and foundries, electrification isn't always viable and shifting to low-carbon energy presents immense technical and financial risk.

Backed by the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, this new industrial-scale testbed provides a safe, controlled environment to trial hydrogen fuel-switching before full-scale adoption on the shop floor.

Matthew Cawood, head of castings at the AMRC, explains why this matters: “By developing this capability at the AMRC, we are proving to our partners that they can slash emissions immediately without needing to reinvent their entire operation."

Join us in celebrating Professor Richard Scaife, who has been recognised in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours 🎉

The prestigious honour recognises the enormous impact of Richards’s work at the AMRC, which has brought renowned names in global manufacturing to Sheffield and Rotherham – one of the 14 percent most deprived areas of England – and provided high quality employment opportunities for hundreds of people in the region.

For Richard, the award is not just a recognition of his work, but a recognition of the teams he’s worked with.

“My hope is that this recognition, of the work done through the AMRC, opens doors to enable further support for the UK manufacturing industry,” said Richard. “For this work to continue to make an impact, after I have left the organisation, would be wonderful.”

🎾From South Yorkshire to the world: how local innovation is creating global opportunities.

One of the standout stories emerging from South Yorkshire's growing tech and innovation community is RallyMatics, a startup transforming traditional tennis ball machines into intelligent training systems that help athletes and coaches train smarter.

As part of the first cohort of the AMRC's FerretWorks programme, RallyMatics is working alongside engineers and innovation specialists to accelerate R&D, refine its technology and strengthen its path to market. By combining advanced sensing, real-time motion tracking and adaptive decision-making, the team is developing next-generation sports technology with international potential.

Their journey reflects a much bigger regional success story. South Yorkshire continues to build a reputation as a place where ambitious businesses can access world-class engineering expertise, research facilities and support to turn innovative ideas into commercial products.

That momentum was recently recognised on the global stage, with Sheffield and South Yorkshire named the UK's leading "Rising Star" tech ecosystem in the 2026 Dealroom Global Tech Ecosystem Index.

RallyMatics is a great example of what that recognition looks like in practice: a company developing cutting-edge technology, creating opportunities locally and demonstrating how innovation born in South Yorkshire can compete on the world stage.

Dr Javier Dominguez-Caballero, technical fellow in AI and digital manufacturing for the AMRC’s machining group (pictured left), talks about how we are fusing classical physics with machine learning to push the boundaries in machining.

Introducing the first cohort of innovators have been working alongside our engineers to turn their concepts into reality, giving them access to £200m of advanced manufacturing capability and £45,000 in dedicated project support.

As we know, engineering innovation doesn’t end at the lab bench or the pitch deck, it reaches into the communities. That's where the real change happens.

For a startup, the gap between a visionary idea and a physical product can sometimes feel impossible to bridge.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard, visited our centre this week to champion a £50 million investment in our region's R&D capabilities. 🤝

🗣️“With government, industry and academia – such as the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre – working hand in hand we are making sure this support is really targeted where it will have the biggest impact," said Luke Pollard, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry.

From local SMEs to major manufacturers, this deal supports the entire engineering community in South Yorkshire.

🗣️ Ben Morgan, CEO of the AMRC, said: “We are working with manufacturers to drive technology acceleration that directly supports both sovereign capability and economic resurgence.”

South Yorkshire Mayor, Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and Rotherham MP Sarah Champion also joined us to see how world-leading research is being turned into practical improvements for the UK’s defence sector.

Our team at AMRC Cymru helped this innovative startup develop a prototype camera that processes marine wildlife data in real-time using Edge AI technology. 🌊🤖

We provided:
