A little fill in job before we are back at a large job in Bedfordshire, this bungalow had an extension on two elevations leaving the original brick looking a bit shabby. We applied Warmcote followed by Limecote plaster from Best of Lime.

It’s clear to tell the difference between imported goat and horse hair, cleaned of it’s natural oils and bundled neatly for the brush and makeup industry. Compared to UK hair loose straight from the Tanners maintaining its natural oils perfect for lime plasters, and historically correct. www.historichairsco.co.uk

Considerable effort is routinely invested in analysing historic mortar compositions to achieve accurate replication, as well as in specifying appropriate lath materials for conservation and repair work. However, the fibre reinforcement within the plaster matrix, possibly one of its most critical components is frequently neglected. This has led to the widespread use of historically inappropriate materials, including imported animal hair and synthetic fibres, which can compromise both performance and authenticity.
Heritage Hairs supplies exclusively UK-sourced, untreated animal hairs, including historicly correct bovine hair, selected to meet historic precedent and conservation best practice. www.historichairsco.co.uk.

As a result of my MSc research into alternatives to imported hair from China, I now have UK-sourced bovine, deer, and goat hair, supplied directly from UK tanneries, available for use in lime plasters and renders.
I will also shortly have long and short horse hair available.
All hair supplied is significantly higher quality than the commonly used imported goat and horse hair currently on the market.
Price: £19.50 per kg + VAT and postage.
Please feel free to direct message me if this is of interest.

This week we have been back at Burton Manor to continue removing over boarded ceilings, requirements under an enforcement order. The work was carried out by the previous owner. Not only did the previous owner carry out this work without consent the boards have been stuck onto the wood chip wallpaper and randomly screwed into the laths, it’s a wonder it stayed up for so long.
After removing the board and woodchip the historic lath and plaster ceiling was secured using stainless steel washers and screws followed by a skim of Limecote finishing plaster.so much easier on my stilts.

Currently working on this large house, the walls are counter battened followed by riven chestnut laths. The pictures show the pricking up coat, this will be followed by a second coat levelled and scratched with a cross grain wooden devil float to provide a key for the final sand and lime fine top coat. The walls will be finished using a scrim and lining method involved stretching and tacking a thin, loosely woven fabric, such as scrim, hessian, or canvas, directly over lath and plaster walls to create a stable substrate. This textile layer was typically tightened with an animal-glue “size,” bridging structural cracks and smoothing the uneven surface of traditional lime plaster. A layer of heavy lining paper was then pasted over the fabric to provide a uniform, non-porous base, ensuring that decorative, high-end wallpapers could be applied without imperfections or adhesive issues. More pictures to follow as the process continues.
