What can plasma do for your semiconductor process?

Our Taiwan reps NYFP are representing Henniker Plasma at SEMICON Taiwan this week, with the HPT-500 vacuum plasma system on display so you can see it in person.

From cleaning to activation and preparation, the HPT-500 handles the surface steps that sit behind reliable bonding, coating and downstream processing. Stop by the stand, and the NYFP team will talk you through how it could work for your own substrates.

Heading to JASIS 2026 this week?

Our Japanese partners, Innovation Science, are exhibiting at JASIS 2026 from 2nd-4th September, representing Henniker Plasma on booth 6A-503.

If you're working on adhesion, wettability or surface activation, stop by and say hello. The Innovation Science team can talk through how plasma treatment might work for your own substrates, and help you find the right system for the job.

📍 Booth 6A-503, JASIS 2026, Makuhari Messe, Chiba.

You can read about plasma treatment, or you can watch it work on your own components.

Surface energy, activation, hydrophobic recovery: the science is sound, but most engineers want to see results on their actual components before committing to a process or a system. That is exactly what a Henniker Discovery Day is for.

Bring your own components to our UK facility and work hands-on with our systems alongside our applications engineers. Treat your material, measure the change, and see for yourself whether plasma solves the adhesion, bonding or cleaning challenge you are facing, in a supportive setting with no guesswork.

The cleanest surface preparation often uses no liquid chemicals at all.

Many adhesion and coating processes still rely on solvent wipes, chemical primers or wet-chemical pre-treatments to make a surface bondable. They work, but they bring the cost, handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals, added drying time, and a process that is hard to keep consistent.

Plasma treatment replaces much of that with a dry, in-line step. A short exposure cleans the surface at the molecular level and raises its surface energy using only process gas and electricity; no solvents, no primers, no liquid waste. The result is more consistent than a manual wipe and far easier to control batch to batch.

As manufacturers work to cut hazardous chemicals and tighten process control, dry plasma pre-treatment is becoming the more sustainable default rather than the exception.

Flexible by design, hard to bond by nature.

The polymers that make a catheter safe and flexible are the same ones that resist coating and bonding.

Plasma surface treatment changes that. Activation raises surface energy in seconds, cutting the contact angle on nylon from 63° to 16° in our own lab, and CoatX® coatings then lock in permanent lubricity, wettability or biomolecule attachment.

How do you make a lens surface permanently wettable?

Nova with CoatX® applies a nano-scale coating that bonds covalently to the surface and leaves IOLs and contact lenses permanently wettable, without altering the base material.

The same result, every batch.

Every kilogram an aircraft carries is paid for in fuel.

That's why structural adhesive bonding is replacing rivets across modern airframes: less fastener mass, and load spread evenly. But a bond is only as good as the surface beneath it, and aluminium and CFRP both arrive with low surface energy and a weak boundary layer.

Plasma treatment fixes this in one dry, non-contact step. It cleans the surface and grafts polar functional groups that raise surface energy and create active sites for the adhesive. No solvents, no abrasives, no fibre damage.

The result is stronger, more repeatable bonds, and a lighter airframe.

Treating 'plasma cleaning' and 'plasma activation' as the same process is where bonds quietly fail.

The two terms get used interchangeably, but they describe distinct surface processes. Cleaning removes organic contamination at the molecular level, leaving a substrate free of the residues that compromise adhesion. Activation goes further: a plasma discharge functionalises the surface, raising surface energy and improving wettability. The result is a surface that an adhesive, ink or coating can properly wet out and bond to.

You can see it in the contact angle. On a low-energy surface the droplet beads up; after activation, it spreads and wets out.

Most production processes rely on both effects. Where a bond is failing, it is usually one of the two that is missing.

Plasma surface treatment that works in the lab doesn't always hold at full production. As volumes rise, surface energy drifts part to part, and inconsistent adhesion, delamination and rework quietly follow.

Henniker's Stratus Manufacturing Cells are built for exactly that. Controlled, repeatable atmospheric plasma treatment that stays stable from the first part to the thousandth:

✅ Higher throughput, without losing control
✅ Consistent surface energy on every part
✅ Stable across long production runs
✅ Automated and programmable, designed to keep pace with the line

Want to test it on your own components?

23/07/2026

Plasma treatment activates a surface at the molecular level, raising surface energy for bonding, wetting and coating, without the solvents, primers and chemical baths that conventional pre-treatment depends on. No wet chemistry to dispose of, and minimal consumables.

Cleaner adhesion, less waste and a smaller footprint.

How is your team thinking about greener pre-treatment?
