Today marks the beginning of Heritage Open Days 2022! This event is to raise appreciation for Europe’s rich and diverse cultural assets and their need for care and protection.

At C-Probe we provide corrosion protection for a range of heritage assets (buildings and bridges for example) in both the UK and US. We do this through our anode mortar, LoCem® that allows us to provide cathodic protection to the internal steel of these structures, meaning the destructive process of is completely controlled! Reusing and adapting our existing assets is essential for building a sustainable for the future.

C-Provide provided expert knowledge and specialist materials to restore and preserve a Grade II listed building that had been lying vacant in York. The derelict Chocolate Factory which was facing severe due to the ingress of moisture and water over time. Key components of the system included:

• LoCem® +point® anode mortar
• Embedded rate sensors
• AchillesICP power, control and monitoring electronics
• AiMS – online remote control and performance management server

Our products become systems, which create a solution that extended this asset's service life by another 100 years! ✅ Check out PDF for more detail:

A closer look at C-Puck ⚡️ C-Puck is a anode that is attached to steel, where the most base metal (the anode) corrodes itself in order to protect the steel where it is attached!

🔸C-Puck has used in the UK and internationally at the Puerto Viejo Mine in the Dominican Republic.
🔸C-Puck II anodes with LoCemCPM were targeted to protect reinforcement steel within the lower vulnerable section of a reinforced concrete support wall within the mine complex.
🔸Tropical temperatures mixed with acid waste from the mine processes increased the likelihood of early damage to the concrete cover from accelerated corrosion effects 🌴

Our article published in Material Performance Magazine! We discuss the potential transition from using new to repurposing industrial wastes to produce or geopolymer conductive anode binders for . Being able to decarbonize this process will not only protect the structures to ensure public safety and a long asset lifetime, but also protects the environment 🌿

The 135 year old former railway bridge was closed in May 2020 after a routine underwater inspection found a structural defect in its wrought iron columns but refurbishment was expected to be completed this summer. Excavation work to install the steel sleeves showed that the of the columns extended well below riverbed level so there was no solid structure to fix the steel sleeves to. This case study demonstrates the need for systems for all types of infrastructure, and not just buildings. Implementing a sufficient strategy would have decreased the amount of disruption, restored the bridge and also strengthened it for future use.

Building new, resilient is key 🏨💪Protecting the internal steel frame which supports a building or bridge should be a top concern - if this deteriorates, so will the structure. The LoCem® Modular Anode Unit (MAU) is an impressed current cathodic protection ( ) component created specifically for structures, implementing protection from day ONE ✅ Cathodic protection is given to the steel meaning it can never corrode.

We are experiencing more aggressive environments with the rise of , so ensuring resilience from the earliest stages is vital!

What are the benefits of our open network management system, AiMS?💻👁️

🔹Remote control and monitoring of the installed system protecting your asset
🔹Archive of structural performance data that can be easily accessed online
🔹Past data provides due diligence if the asset is to ever be sold
🔹Monitor the corrosion activity within your asset and prove performance of the installed system

A recent study found that the annual cost of corrosion in Canada was an estimated price tag of $63 Billion CAD. These costs derived from corrosion-related deterioration and failures of national assets. This issue is echoed in many other countries globally, and these costs could be minimised if practices were adopted. The study also identified savings between 15-35% of that amount through implementation of existing corrosion control practices ✅💰

C-Probe offer corrosion management systems for existing and new infrastructure. LoCem®, our anode mortar, enables cathodic protection to the internal steel in structures. This is a sustainable route to whole life protection and enhanced service life as the structure is continuously protected and monitored 👁️💻

Our latest discusses the impact has on existing infrastructure: https://www.c-probe.co.uk/the-effect-of-climate-change-on-existing-and-new-infrastructure/ 🏚️

Decarbonization of is key in terms of resilience and . Control of corrosion and protection of the steel retains vital embodied carbon and lengthens the structure’s service life over decades, reducing the need for complete demolition or replacement of the structure 🏢📈

Climate change leads to higher rates of carbonation, causing deterioration of existing infrastructure and reducing service life.

What effect is having on the ? 💭 Most structures are still made from , steel and aggregate which all contribute significantly to CO2 emissions globally in their construction. This leads to climate change which is also currently a huge threat to the built environment.

Rising atmospheric CO2 levels and warmer temperatures accelerate carbonation and corrosion to reinforced concrete infrastructure. In the UK, normally isn't a problem, but up until the mid 80's that was based on concrete exposed to

UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard to "address current ambiguities around the much-used term" https://www.dezeen.com/2022/05/13/uk-net-zero-carbon-buildings-standard-launch/

Named the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, the initiative will help the industry to ensure and prove that buildings claiming to be hold up to that claim.
Net-zero carbon buildings are designed to eliminate all possible emissions over a building's lifetime. This takes into account both , which are emissions caused by the construction supply chain, and operational carbon, which are emissions caused by a building's use.

A group of leading industry organisations have come together to create a building standard that will verify net-zero carbon buildings in the UK.
