This week is set to be the hottest of the year so far, with temperatures predicted to exceed 30C.

With increasing impacts of climate change, weather events such as these will become more common.

We've put together some guidance on staying safe in the heat, and you can click the link to see the government guidance and find out the water refill locations on campus. https://linktr.ee/uos_sustain

Today is Clean Air Day the UK’s largest campaign dedicated to raising awareness about how air pollution affects our health and environment.

•In the UK transport related air pollution is linked to up to 30,000 deaths each year.
•In Salford 8% of residents live with respiratory conditions that can be worsened by poor air quality.
•Transport emissions account for 41% of Salford’s climate emissions and 100% of neighbourhoods in the city exceeds the World Health Organisation’s recommended air pollution limits.

By making small changes such as choosing active travel or using public transport, we can help create healthier communities with cleaner air.

Today is World Refill Day.
It is a day about making reuse part of everyday life and showing that refill and reuse options are easier and more accessible than many people think.

Here at the University of Salford there are a range of refill stations including in The Maxwell Building, University House, The Allerton Building and Clifford Whitworth Library. You can check where the refill stations are located using the webpage, which provides a map: https://www.salford.ac.uk/campus/eat-and-drink/water-refill-points

Is there a handy refill tip that you have? Let us know in the comments!

Have you spotted any of our wonderful Bee Orchids on campus yet? 🌷

Since we're Letting It Grow, these wonderful flowers have been able to bloom. The flowers are designed to mimic female bees of a particular bee species which tricks male bees into pollinating the flower. Though they are native to the UK, the bee species that pollinate them unfortunately doesn't reside in the country, so these bee orchids self pollinate.

Have a swipe through to see some of the other lovely flowers that have sprung up during our Let It Grow campaign! ➡️

1. Bee Orchid (Christchurch Avenue Orchard)
2. Ragged Robin (Chapman)
3. Ox-eye Daisy (Faith Centre)
4. Clover (Faith Centre)
5. Common Knapweed (University Road Embankment)
6. Daisy (Community Growing Space)

Happy Bike week! 🚲

Opting for actively travel can be good for you and the planet.

By choosing to cycle, you can significantly reduce the carbon emissions and pollution of a commute.

Not only that but cycling can be a great way to keep active, fit and healthy through exercising and getting outdoors!

Why not giving cycling a try this bike week? There's plenty of bike sheds on campus and if you don't have your own, the Starling bikes are a great option to make use of.

Have a look at our campus map to see the bike sheds available to use on campus - https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1lJ-wVIKr3Ql5UJWcr3OGufDT3OY&ll=53.488836279200655%2C-2.2723388183526105&z=16

Whilst there's lots we can do individually for sustainability, we all need to work together to have as big an impact as possible.

Whether it's convincing people to use the right bin for their rubbish, to ditch the car and opt for public transport or to make more sustainable choices in their work practices, there's lots of ways we can encourage others to act more sustainably.

This online workshop looks at who we want to engage and how we can best engage them to make more sustainable choices and take sustainable action.

No Mow May is over - but wild spaces support nature all year round, which is why we're continuing to Let It Grow! We're taking a no and low mow approach across the rest of summer heading into August.

By reducing the amount we mow, we're providing habitat for insects to shelter and feed which supports the wider ecosystem as well as providing additional environmental benefits such as pollution and carbon capture.

Have a look to see what you might find making use of the areas we're letting grow and let us know which spots are your favourite! 🌻
