Phase 1 has commenced at our Grade II listed chapel project in Tooting.

We are now underway with internal enabling carefully preparing the building ahead of the main programme of conservation repairs and conversion into a residential dwelling.

This initial phase focuses on stabilising the internal environment, stripping back incompatible modern interventions, and creating the right conditions for breathable, conservation-led works to follow. As with any historic building, the early stages are about understanding the fabric properly and working methodically to protect what remains.

Looking forward to seeing this remarkable Victorian chapel begins its next chapter.

Last week we exhibited at the Listed Property Owners Show at Olympia London.

Alongside the stand, we were asked to carry out live demonstrations, with members of our team showcasing traditional linseed oil putty repairs and tuck pointing techniques.

It was a pleasure to talk through these methods in person and see such strong interest in traditional materials and skills. The show was also a great opportunity to catch up with suppliers, specialists and familiar faces from across the historic building environment.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a conversation.

We delivered the construction works as main contractor for a new gallery space on Baker Street, London, as part of a high street activation project.

Working with The Portman Estate and Westminster City Council, the unit was brought back into use as an open and accessible space intended to remove traditional barriers to engaging with art on the high street.

Site Manager Harry Dredge commented:
“It was rewarding to help deliver a space that supports emerging artists and brings art back into everyday public life.”

Founded by Aurelia Islimye, Bleur is centred on accessibility, conversation and creating meaningful connections between artists and the public.

While carrying out works to a historic building, within Salisbury cathedral estate our team uncovered original 19th-century newspapers used as wall linings behind later finishes.

The papers include an edition of The Times dated Friday 30 November 1827 and an edition of The Salisbury and Wi******er Journal dated Monday 27 June 1831, reflecting common building practice of the period.

The finds have been reported and will be transferred to the relevant estates archive for recording and conservation.

We are pleased to have commenced works a significant project within Salisbury Cathedral Close.

Dating back to the fifteenth century and largely rebuilt during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this Grade II* listed building is a substantial and highly significant example of Jacobean architecture. The project involves extensive internal and external restoration, including the careful repair of historic fabric, architectural detailing and decorative interiors.

A major and rewarding scheme, and one we are proud to be entrusted with.

Ceiling conservation works completed in Salisbury city centre for one of our commercial clients.

Following a water leak from above, damage was caused to a historic C18th ceiling. Once the source was resolved, works focused on stabilising and repairing the ceiling using a minimal intervention, conservation-led approach.

Damaged plaster and laths were carefully removed only where necessary, with relathing and reinstatement using traditional hair and lime plaster. Localised repairs were carried out to the enriched mouldings, retaining as much original fabric as possible.

Modern emulsion paint was stripped back and the ceiling redecorated using a breathable Earthborn clay paint, allowing the historic lime plaster to perform as intended.

A considered example of how traditional materials and careful methodology can extend the life of historic interiors without unnecessary loss.

To fully appreciate this one, you really have to see how far it’s come.

This circa 300-year-old former post office near Pewsey had been covered in a hard, impermeable sand and cement render. Once carefully removed by hand, the extent of the damage caused by incompatible modern materials became clear.

What was revealed was a beautiful historic brick façade sitting in front of a 9-inch solid wall, with snap header courses, gauged brick arches and semi-elliptical door arches hidden for decades.

The client fell in love with the elevation and challenged us to retain the exposed brickwork rather than re-render. Our master brick mason, Jonny Dennis, carried out careful, non-invasive repairs, restoring the arches with tuck pointing and repointing the façade using a hot mixed lime mortar to allow the building to breathe once again.

Proof that with the right craftsmen, historic fabric can be repaired rather than replaced.

An update from our project in Newbury, where phase one of the conservation, remedial and repair works is now well underway across a group of eighteenth-century listed cottages.

This stage has been focused on bringing the buildings back into proper working order while preserving the character that gives them their charm. The programme so far has included timber window restoration, lime patch pointing, sensitive brickwork repairs, French drain installation and specialist air-pressured roof cleaning.

We have also begun introducing sheep’s wool insulation in the lofts, which offers a breathable and sympathetic approach that sits comfortably with the needs of historic buildings.

It is careful, steady work that supports the long-term health of the cottages and helps ensure they remain comfortable, well-lived homes for many years to come.

Our specialist window repair team visited Charles Brooking at The Brooking Museum today, and it was a real privilege. His lifetime of work documenting and preserving the history of the English window is extraordinary. Seeing original joinery, early sash mechanisms and centuries of craftsmanship up close was a reminder of how much skill and ingenuity sits behind even the simplest architectural details.
