For more than 20 years, we’ve taken a long-term approach to developing the people and skills our business needs for the future.

It started with engaging with local secondary schools about careers and apprenticeships, then grew into work experience placements, T Level placements and, ultimately, apprenticeships and careers at Tees Components.

Some of the people who first encountered Tees Components as school pupils 20 years ago are now part of our team.

We’ve continued to invest in that approach, including our Bolckow Apprentice Training Facility and a dedicated member of staff supporting our apprentices. This allows us to provide development that goes beyond what is possible through college training alone, giving our apprentices the opportunity to build the specific technical skills our business needs.

For us, developing future skills isn’t a short-term initiative. It’s an ongoing investment in our people, our business and the future of engineering in our region.

That long-term approach has now been highlighted by Enginuity as part of its Future Skills Hub, with a new case study looking at how we are developing the skills our business and the wider engineering sector will need in the years ahead.

After a busy summer programme of events for Tees Components Brass, the second annual Bandamonium Brass Band Festival last month was a fitting way to bring the season to a close.

Tees Components Brass performed at various locations throughout the day alongside a fantastic selection of North Yorkshire brass bands, including Stape Silver Band, Bandamonium Barbarians, Kirkbymoorside Town Band, London Metropolitan Band, Tewit Community Brass and Swinton & District Excelsior Silver Band, before all the bands came together in Kirkbymoorside for the final concert.

Tees Brass threw themselves into the spirit of the occasion, starting the day at Helmsley Brewing Company with a wild-west-themed programme featuring A Yorkshire Celebration, Pink Pony Club with a hit of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Frontier Fantasia and, to finish, Hootenanny.

And what a way to finish it — the band came away with the Spirit of Bandamonium Award at the day’s finale, recognising the enthusiasm and spirit they brought to the event.

Well done to the whole band — a great performance, an enjoyable day and a very well-deserved award.

We’re thrilled to share that Stuart has won the Environmental Award at the BBC Radio Tees Make a Difference Awards.

Twelve years ago, Ringrose Orchard was a piece of derelict land. Today, it’s a peaceful place for the local community, as well as a space where volunteers and children from Skelton Primary School can learn about and enjoy the natural environment.

That transformation is testament to the time, care and dedication Stuart and the Friends of Skelton Community Orchard have put into the orchard over the years.

Tees Components are proud supporters of the Friends of Skelton Community Orchard, so it’s fantastic to see Stuart’s work and the wider team’s contribution celebrated with this award.

And there was even more reason for Skelton to celebrate, with Ian Milburn also winning the Great Neighbour Award.

It’s brilliant to see two Skelton residents picking up awards at this year’s ceremony, celebrating the contribution they make to our local community.

World Mental Health Day – 10 October

World Mental Health Day is a reminder of the importance of looking after our mental health and making sure people know where they can turn for support.
Here are some of the ways we’ve been working to improve mental health support at Tees Components.

Mental Health First Aiders
A number of our team have completed Mental Health First Aid training, giving colleagues access to trained Mental Health First Aiders on site who can provide a listening ear and help signpost people towards further support when needed.
It’s a practical way of making sure people know there is someone they can turn to.
Our Mental Health First Aiders also have access to the MHFA England® app, providing additional resources to help them support and signpost colleagues.

Sharing lived experiences
This year’s theme is “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change”.
We’ve welcomed speakers from organisations including Knock Out Depression, Headlight Project and ANDYS MAN CLUB, who have shared their experiences and talked openly about mental health, the challenges people can face and what has helped them.
These can be difficult conversations, but creating opportunities to talk openly about subjects that are often hard to discuss is important. There are some brilliant organisations across Teesside doing exactly that.

Helping the next generation talk about mental health
We recently sponsored Teesside Mind’s Colour Run at Lockwood Primary School, supporting its work with pupils, families and staff around mental health and wellbeing.
Supporting initiatives like this is another way we can contribute to positive conversations about mental health within our local community.

Our Annual Employee Appreciation Awards are an opportunity to recognise the commitment, skills and achievements of our team throughout the year.

From long service and apprenticeship milestones to those who go the extra mile and make a difference to the people around them, the awards recognise a range of contributions across the business.

This year, we were pleased to welcome our local MP, Luke Myer, who presented our long service awards and shared a few words with the team. We were also joined by Simon Jones from Helix Tool Co Ltd, who presented our Apprentice of the Year Award, sponsored by Helix Tool.

It was a chance to take a little time out from the day-to-day, come together and recognise the people who make a difference to our business.

With a wide range of complex parts making their way through our machining facility, sometimes the most challenging uncertainty can be how we will handle, lift, move and protect our customers' parts.

Some components and assemblies are approaching our maximum lifting capacity of 72 tonnes. Movement and turning over might mean significant workshop downtime to ensure we can move parts safely, sourcing specific lifting accessories, and making bespoke protection to ensure parts aren’t contaminated. Some customers invite us to visit their sites to see how they handle their parts, which is a great way for us to develop our people and ensure we take care of components for customers.
