Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy

Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy was created in 2013.

Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy (WWCE) develops community-owned renewable energy projects that reduce carbon emissions and create more wildlife in Wiltshire while generating local benefits via a Community Fund and returns to community shareholders. We own 3 rooftop solar arrays on Wiltshire Wildlife Trust buildings and two community solar farms: Chelworth and Braydon Manor. We are a not for p

rofit community benefit society owned by our '1 member 1 vote' shareholders, governed by local volunteer directors and run for the benefit of Wiltshire communities. Surplus funds generated by our solar arrays go into a community grant fund to support community-led initiatives that help reduce carbon emissions and create more wildlife in Wiltshire. 🌱 June marks the start of 30 Days Wild — a month-long challenge encouraging people to connect with nature every day.

From listening to birdsong on your morning walk to planting pollinator-friendly flowers or simply spending a few minutes outdoors, small actions can have a big impact on both our wellbeing and our relationship with the natural world.

At Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy, we know that tackling climate change and restoring nature go hand in hand. That's why we're encouraging everyone to take part and discover the benefits of bringing a little more wildness into everyday life.

☀️ A recent BBC News-reported trend shows solar installations in the UK reaching their highest levels in years, as households respond to rising energy costs and uncertainty.

This surge in solar reflects a broader shift, with people wanting more control over their energy and a way to reduce both their bills and their emissions.

has a vital role to play here... By developing renewable assets, we can ensure that the financial, environmental, and social benefits they generate are distributed fairly.

In Wiltshire, projects like those we operate at Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy demonstrate how local generation can be part of the solution - supporting both people and nature!

Recent reporting highlights a clear shift among the public in the UK - is now a top priority for households, with many investing in improvements to futureproof their homes and reduce bills.

A poll commissioned by Daikin Europe found 63% considered investing in energy efficiency to be very important to futureproof their home against price volatility. The research also found that 32% want more control over their energy bills, with 22% worried about energy security, and 32% often concerned about price volatility of gas and electricity.

This aligns with what we’ve seen on the ground in Wiltshire during our Keeping Warm This Winter initiative. People are increasingly recognising that the cheapest energy is the energy you don’t use - whether that’s through additional insulation, smarter heating, or generating your own power.

At WWCE, our work complements this change! Community solar projects like the ones we operate at Chelworth, Braydon and Silverwood School help to reduce overall reliance on fossil fuels, while our wider initiatives aim to support local people in cutting both carbon and costs.

Energy efficiency and community renewables go hand in hand and together, they’re key to building a more resilient, low-carbon future.

🌿 Friday was International Day for Biodiversity and a moment to reflect on the importance of protecting and restoring the natural world around us and thinking about how local actions can add up to global impact!

At Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy, protecting and promoting biodiversity is central to everything we do. From how we design and manage our solar sites to how we distribute our Community Fund grants, we’re committed to delivering benefits for both people and wildlife.

Our close links with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust help ensure that our projects align with wider efforts to restore habitats and support nature across the county.

Community energy can and should be a force for good in nature. By combining renewable energy generation with careful management that protects ecology, we can help build a future where both thrive.

🐝 Last Wednesday was World Bee Day and we joined in celebrating the small but mighty pollinators that play such a vital role in our ecosystems and food systems.

This year, we’re especially pleased to be able to support a bee-friendly project at Silverwood School in Rowde through a ring-fenced grant from our Community Fund. This grant will help the school's students engage with nature, learn about pollinators, and take practical steps to support biodiversity.

This is a partnership that goes even further than funding eco-schemes, though! The grant has only been made possible thanks to our successful community share offer last year, which led to us being able to purchase a rooftop solar array at Silverwood - generating clean energy which powers the school and benefits its 400+ students directly.

For us, this is what community energy is all about - connecting climate action with education, nature recovery, and local impact! Let's 'Bee Together'!

⚡ Join a free workshop on community energy in Westbury and surrounding areas this Wednesday!

Hosted by Zero North Wiltshire, Wiltshire Council and the Centre For Sustainable Energy, you're invited to come along to this interactive Future Energy Landscapes workshop to share your thoughts on community energy in the area.

📍Wednesday 20 May 6pm-8.30pm at The Laverton.

As we've shown through our work at Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy, when communities lead renewable energy projects, they have the power to create solutions that work for everyone – tackling both climate change and rising energy costs. Community-led energy projects can keep benefits local by bringing money into the local economy and investing in facilities.

This Wednesday's workshop is for anyone who lives or works in the area - everyone is welcome and no prior knowledge needed.

🌿Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy will be at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Country Comes to Town event in Warminster this Saturday!

Country Comes to Town is a fantastic opportunity to connect with the local community, celebrate nature, and explore the ways we can all support a greener, more sustainable future across Wiltshire. There'll be a whole host of nature-based crafts and games, as well as a 'smoothie bike' that'll see you pedal your way to a fruity treat!

WWT's expert team will be leading guided walks through the reserve throughout the day, showcasing the biodiversity of the local chalk streams and wetlands.

If you’re coming along, be sure to stop by our stand and say hello to some of the WWCE team! We’d love to have a chat about our community energy projects, renewable energy in general, and how we're helping bring local climate-friendly schemes to life through our Community Fund.

We look forward to seeing you there!

📺Did you catch our chair Julian Barlow on ITV Itv Westcountry Country Tuesday night?!

A huge thank you to David Hedges for coming out to visit our Braydon site recently, and to the whole team at ITV News West Country for including Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy in its 'Action on Energy' series, helping to shine a light on the role local communities can play in building a more sustainable future.

⚡Community-led energy has an important role to play in tackling climate change, supporting local resilience, and ensuring the benefits of renewable energy are shared more widely. To that end, Julian is always more than happy to speak to the media about renewable energy, community energy initiatives, and the opportunities and challenges facing projects in Wiltshire and beyond!

Thanks also go to Community Energy England and everyone involved in putting the piece together. We look forward to following the rest of the series!

We were delighted to welcome David Hedges from ITV News West Country to our Braydon solar park here in Wiltshire recently ☀️

Our Chair, Julian Barlow, spoke on camera about the role community energy plays in tackling climate change and delivering real benefits for local people - from generating clean power to supporting nature recovery and funding other community groups, projects like ours show what’s possible when local people come together with a shared purpose.

At Wiltshire Wildlife Community Energy, we believe renewable energy isn’t just about megawatts, it’s about meaningful impact - supporting wildlife, reducing carbon emissions, and reinvesting in the communities we live in!

A big thank you to Community Energy England for giving us the opportunity to get involved, and to the ITV team for shining a light on community energy in action.

Hopefully we'll have made the final cut when the piece goes out today!
