Enjoying Cornwall's coastline with your dog this summer? 🐾🌊

Please keep dogs on leads when walking along coast paths and near cliff tops.

Dogs can easily become startled and distracted by wildlife, waves, noises or unfamiliar surroundings, and in a split second may run too close to cliff edges or into danger.

To help keep everyone safe:
🐕‍🦺 Always keep dogs on leads near cliffs and coastal paths
🏔️ Stay well back from cliff edges - you can spot risks from above, your dog can't
👀 Keep a close eye on pets around wildlife, steep drops and rough seas
🌊 Never enter the water to rescue a dog: move to a safe place and calmly call them back
🚨In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard

Remember: keep your dog safe, one lead could save a life 🙏

Meet the Dragonfly Squad! 🪰

Who knew the secret to a more comfortable day working outdoors could be... a couple of fake dragonflies? 👀

A trio of Cormac colleagues from our Environment Service have been putting dragonfly decoys to the test to see whether they could help keep biting insects at bay. And it seems their new unusual workwear accessory might actually be onto something!

Over the course of four days, the team found that:
✅ Wobblier dragonflies appeared to work best
✅ Two decoys offered better protection than one
✅ Light-coloured and high-vis clothing attracted less attention than darker clothing
✅ And one particularly convincing decoy even caught the attention of a real dragonfly!

The team found the decoys provided effective protection without relying on insect repellent, and have now been affectionately named the Dragonfly Squad 💪

So, if you're tired of being bitten by bugs this summer, perhaps it's time to recruit a couple of dragonfly wingmen of your own! 🪰

Volunteers learn traditional scything skills to support wildlife across Cornwall 🌿

Volunteers from the Cormac Volunteer Scheme recently took part in beginner scything courses delivered by Kevin Austin of Skygrove Scythe School, one of the UK's leading experts and a former British Champion at the Somerset Scythe Fair.

The courses were held at Helston Cemetery and at Skyegrove near Liskeard for volunteers from established groups across Cornwall. Participants learned the traditional craft of scything, a more wildlife-friendly way of managing grassland and vegetation that helps protect habitats and support biodiversity.🦋

At the Helston course, volunteers were able to take their scythes home to use on local projects, including Red River Rescuers in Camborne, Friends of Tregoniggie Woodland and Boscawen Fields in Falmouth.

Volunteer Dave said:

"We had a great day with an enthusiastic trainer in beautiful surroundings. I particularly enjoyed the practical sessions and it was useful to have Kevin on hand to correct our faults as we mowed."

Volunteer Mark put his new skills into practice the very next day, helping to cut back bracken, nettles and brambles alongside the Countryside Ranger team.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers who continue to learn new skills and help care for Cornwall's precious green spaces. 🌱

The Cormac Beach Management Team recently joined a fantastic range of local organisations at Gyllyngvase Beach Day in Falmouth, helping families learn more about enjoying our beaches safely and responsibly.☀️🌊

Sue, Senior Beach Officer, said:

"It was a great opportunity to talk directly with beach users about the work we do, share practical beach safety advice and answer questions in a relaxed and fun environment.

We also had the chance to try out our new Beach Safety Quiz and colouring sheets, which proved a real hit with both children and adults! The resources have been developed as another way of engaging families with important safety messages, while making learning about the beach a little more fun."

The day brought together organisations including Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Plastic Free Falmouth Official, Cornish Seal Sanctuary, Children's Sailing Trust, Sand Safe and many others.

Activities ranged from rockpool exploration and beach games to storytelling and marine conservation, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

A big thank you to everyone involved in organising the day and to all those who stopped to chat with us. Events like this are a wonderful way to work alongside other organisations, meet the people who use our beaches and share simple messages that can help everyone enjoy the coast safely.

A fresh step forward for countryside access 🌿👣

Our Countryside Team West have recently completed the installation of a new staircase stile at Higher Condurrow after the previous structure reached the end of its life, making it easier and safer for walkers to enjoy this well-used countryside route and its far-reaching views across the former mining district.

Delivered with capital funding from Cornwall Council, the support of the local landowner and the expertise of our Countryside Team, the project highlights how careful planning and collaboration can deliver lasting results and improve access to Cornwall's beautiful countryside.

A dedicated community gardening group, Bolitho Gardens in Penzance is looking for new volunteers after seeing its numbers gradually decrease over the years, from 14 members down to just two. People have left due to ill health, changes in employment, or moving away from the area.

The group's original founders, Val Cocking and Judy Ellis, are now seeking new members to help maintain these beautiful beachside gardens. With such a large site to care for, it needs more than just two pairs of hands to keep it looking its best.

To give them a head start in restoring the gardens to their original condition, staff from Cornwall Council's Democratic Services Department recently used their volunteer day to come and lend a hand. They were also joined by volunteers from the nearby Newlyn Flora Group and Councillor Jim McKenna, who also rolled up his sleeves and got stuck in.

Everyone had a great time weeding, mulching and cutting back overgrown vegetation. Afterwards, the team of volunteers enjoyed delicious ginger and lemon cake made by Urban Ranger Becky, along with plenty of tea and coffee. ☕🍰

Following the success of the day, they're looking to do it all again at Bolitho Gardens on Thursday 10 September, from 10am until 1pm.

🌿All tools and equipment are provided
🌿Just wear sturdy boots or shoes and dress appropriately for the weather and gardening activities
🌿Bring a packed lunch, sunscreen and a hat
