A mental health charity has celebrated a remarkable milestone as it appeals for more volunteers to come forward.
The Samaritans of Medway, Gravesham and Swale has been providing a vital emotional support helpline to the local community for 60 years.
To celebrate six decades of service, local dignitaries, charities, community groups, and volunteers gathered at St Nicholas Church in Strood — a venue that plays a part in the in the charity’s rich history, having been used for volunteer training during the power cuts of the 1970s.
The afternoon featured an exhibition of archive materials, photographs, and documents charting how the service has evolved since 1966.
Central to the occasion was the recognition of six long-serving listening volunteers who were honoured for extraordinary dedication - with the group holding a combined 183 years of service on the helpline between them.
Branch director Adrian Brindley, said: “To see so many Samaritans past and present together and sharing their stories, memories and experiences was incredible.
"We deliver our work quietly, day in and day out, without seeking praise or recognition, which made this moment of celebration even more special.”
The local branch is appealing for new volunteers to meet a rising demand for overnight support.
