For every serious incident, there may be hundreds of near misses and unsafe acts beforehand — sometimes 300 to 600 opportunities to learn before someone suffers a serious injury.

That was one of the key messages from the first SSUK incident investigation training session, recently delivered at Rotherham for colleagues across different functions and roles.

The session focused on why we need to investigate not only accidents, but also hazards and near misses. Too often, businesses only investigate once something serious has happened. By looking properly at near misses, we have a chance to spot problems earlier, understand root causes and prevent them from developing into accidents.

The training also covered practical investigation skills, including evidence gathering, witness interviews and identifying effective corrective actions.

Thank you to David Felvus, Rotherham Health & Safety Lead, Chris Frier, Safety & Training Coordinator, and the wider Health & Safety team for developing and delivering this course, and to everyone who took part.

Further training is planned as SSUK continues to build a more proactive approach to health and safety.

Mental health and wellbeing is one of the key pillars of our Health and Safety strategy at Speciality Steel UK.

We continue to promote wellbeing at work to help reduce stigma, encourage open conversations and remind colleagues that support is available.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, our colleague Dave Felvus, Health & Safety Lead, has shared his personal story of recovery after suffering a cardiac arrest in 2021.

Dave’s physical recovery took time, but one of the biggest challenges was the impact on his mental health.

He found himself constantly wondering whether it could happen again, with every small twinge or sensation becoming something to worry about.

Through counselling, support from the British Heart Foundation, cardiac rehabilitation, breathing techniques, light exercise and peer support, Dave gradually rebuilt confidence and learned how to manage those thoughts.

Dave said: “Health events don’t just affect you physically — they can have a lasting mental impact. It’s okay to ask for help — support is out there, and it works.”

Dave also wanted to thank the colleagues who supported him during his recovery, both while he was at home and when he returned to work after a year away.

Thank you, Dave, for sharing your story so openly. It is a powerful reminder that recovery is not always just physical — and that asking for support can make a real difference.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Today is a moment to pause and reflect — but also to recognise the work that happens every day to keep people safe.

At Speciality Steel UK, safety sits at the core of everything we do.

Over the past year, we’ve seen real progress in health and safety across the business. But what matters most is what sits behind that — a shift in behaviour, ownership and consistency across our sites.

Our Leadership Safety Workshops are now a regular part of how we work. They bring teams together to step back, reflect, share learning and challenge ourselves on where we need to go further.

Across all our sites, the direction is clear: stronger leadership visibility, more structured auditing, better quality procedures, and — importantly — growing ownership at team leader and shop floor level.

Safety is not something that sits in a process. It’s something people take responsibility for. And that’s where real change happens.

There’s still more to do. We continue to address areas such as hazard identification, supervision and site conditions.

But today is a good moment to recognise the progress — and the collective effort behind it.

Because safety isn’t built in a single initiative or campaign.

It’s built in everyday decisions, conversations and actions — and in looking out for each other.

The Official Receiver has confirmed a major step toward the sale of Speciality Steel UK, which includes sites at Rotherham and Stocksbridge, following the company’s liquidation last August.

A period of exclusivity has been agreed with a preferred bidder, marking the next stage of a future sale agreement.

This is expected to last approximately five weeks, during which the preferred bidder will progress their bid.

SSUK was wound up in August 2025, with the Official Receiver administering the liquidation, including activity at the steelworks.

Employees have been informed.

The Official Receiver will look to complete the sale at the earliest opportunity.

For the fifth year in a row, Speciality Steel UK colleagues are supporting students from local schools as mentors on the Industrial Cadets Bronze Project, focused on sustainability and the environment. Working with The EDT UK, our mentors will help students develop their project brief over 12–14 weeks.

It’s great to see so many colleagues returning again this year to support students from Wath Academy, High Storrs School and Stocksbridge High School.

This year, Andrew Turton — who has been a mentor for four years in a row — has returned as an assessor for Brinsworth Academy. He has shared some practical advice for students based on his experience.

Good luck to all the students, teachers and mentors taking part this year.

We are proud to share that Speciality Steel UK has once again maintained Nadcap 2-Year Gold Merit status for both our Stocksbridge and Rotherham (BBR) heat treatment facilities.

This is an important achievement for our business and a strong reflection of the professionalism, teamwork and attention to detail shown by colleagues across Quality, Operations, Engineering and support functions.

Nadcap is a globally recognised accreditation for specialist processes used in the aerospace, defence and space supply chains. Maintaining Gold Merit status demonstrates consistent compliance with demanding requirements and highlights the strength of the systems, discipline and expertise behind our work every day.

Mark Hesling, QA Manager, said:
“What makes this achievement especially meaningful is that, despite operational pressures, industry-wide uncertainty and evolving demands on our teams, we have continued to deliver work that meets rigorous global standards. This shows that we remain focused, dependable and committed to quality.”

A special thank you to everyone involved across both sites, including the teams at BBR, Stocksbridge Downstream and Process Control, whose work underpins the control, traceability and precision required to maintain this standard.

Well done to all involved.

Women across SPECIALITY STEEL UK contribute their skills, experience and commitment in a wide range of roles — from technical and operational work to quality, HR and business support.

This Sunday, 8 March, marks International Women’s Day. This year’s theme, Give to Gain, highlights the value of sharing knowledge, supporting one another and creating opportunities for people to grow.

Ahead of the day, we asked a few colleagues to reflect on their careers in manufacturing and what Give to Gain means to them.

👉 Scroll through the carousel to hear from Grace Pearson, Emma Baker-Barnes, Danielle Turner-Hirst and Christina Harold.

Their stories reflect different journeys but a shared commitment to teamwork, learning and supporting others.

GRACE PEARSON, Materials Technology Degree Apprentice:

➡️ "Before joining SSUK I had never worked in manufacturing. When I discovered STEM degree apprenticeships, I realised it was exactly the path I wanted to take.

One of the moments I’m most proud of was speaking to young girls about my journey — seeing them take inspiration from it was incredibly rewarding.

The Give to Gain theme really resonates with me. I’ve been given opportunities through education, mentoring and STEM outreach, and it’s rewarding to give something back.”

EMMA BAKER-BARNES, Quality Systems Specialist:

➡️ “For me, support at work means helping others develop, sharing knowledge and knowing there are people around you willing to listen and help when needed.

Several colleagues supported me along the way — including Mark Hesling and Helen Bisby when I moved into QA, as well as managers who encouraged me to continue developing my skills.

The Give to Gain theme reflects something simple: never be afraid to help others, because one day you may need that support yourself.

I never expected to end up working at a steelworks, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.”

DANIELLE TURNER-HIRST, Contracts Coordinator:

➡️ “One of the best things about my role is that no two days are the same. My work ranges from monitoring KPIs and service level agreements to planning services across multiple sites.

But the best part is the people. Working with colleagues across SSUK and our contracting teams makes every day interesting.

For me, the idea of Give to Gain is simple — you get out what you put in.”

CHRISTINA HAROLD, HR Business Partner & Head of HR Shared Services:

➡️ “One of the things I value most in my role is sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues as they develop.

That’s why the International Women’s Day theme this year — Give to Gain — resonates with me. Throughout my career I’ve been fortunate to work with people who shared their experience and supported my development.

When people support each other and share what they know, everyone benefits.”

Over a 10-week period, our Stocksbridge Billet Mill achieved a 27% improvement in energy efficiency — demonstrating stronger operational control, increased energy awareness and more effective use of assets.

The progress reflects structured planning, disciplined ex*****on and close collaboration across Operations, Engineering, production operatives and our Energy and Environmental teams.

Key actions included targeted energy improvement workshops focused on soaker utilisation, equipment optimisation and operating practices, alongside embedding a weekly “Energy Walk the Floor” audit into routine operations, led by Shift Managers, Team Leaders and the On-Shift Electrical team.

Rhys Keenan, Production Manager, said:
“What’s made the difference is ownership. Energy is part of our daily operational conversations. When teams understand the impact of stable operation and effective utilisation, the results follow.”

Thank you to everyone involved for their continued commitment to improving energy performance across SSUK.

Teams at Speciality Steel UK have successfully completed a major in-house repair of the crane rail at the Water Treatment Plant in Rotherham — the facility that cleans all the water used in the rolling process at Thrybergh Bar Mill (TBM).

This work helps ensure TBM remains match-fit and ready to deliver customer orders quickly and efficiently whenever production is required.

Although this was the first time the current TBM teams have worked together on a repair of this scale, colleagues from the Mechanical, Structural and Electrical departments collaborated seamlessly to complete the job safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

The Crane Team, CEW, and the Machine Shop — supported by specialist contractors where needed, including for statutory inspection — all contributed to the rail replacement.

A big thank you to Gary Hall, Mark Carrington, Andy Johnson, Chris Burgin, Richard Rooker, Sam Bradley, Ryan Harris, Alfie Pass, and everyone involved for your professionalism, commitment, and dedication to the business.
