Women across SPECIALITY STEEL UK contribute their skills, experience and commitment in a wide range of roles — from technical and operational work to quality, HR and business support.
This Sunday, 8 March, marks International Women’s Day. This year’s theme, Give to Gain, highlights the value of sharing knowledge, supporting one another and creating opportunities for people to grow.
Ahead of the day, we asked a few colleagues to reflect on their careers in manufacturing and what Give to Gain means to them.
👉 Scroll through the carousel to hear from Grace Pearson, Emma Baker-Barnes, Danielle Turner-Hirst and Christina Harold.
Their stories reflect different journeys but a shared commitment to teamwork, learning and supporting others.
GRACE PEARSON, Materials Technology Degree Apprentice:
➡️ "Before joining SSUK I had never worked in manufacturing. When I discovered STEM degree apprenticeships, I realised it was exactly the path I wanted to take.
One of the moments I’m most proud of was speaking to young girls about my journey — seeing them take inspiration from it was incredibly rewarding.
The Give to Gain theme really resonates with me. I’ve been given opportunities through education, mentoring and STEM outreach, and it’s rewarding to give something back.”
EMMA BAKER-BARNES, Quality Systems Specialist:
➡️ “For me, support at work means helping others develop, sharing knowledge and knowing there are people around you willing to listen and help when needed.
Several colleagues supported me along the way — including Mark Hesling and Helen Bisby when I moved into QA, as well as managers who encouraged me to continue developing my skills.
The Give to Gain theme reflects something simple: never be afraid to help others, because one day you may need that support yourself.
I never expected to end up working at a steelworks, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
DANIELLE TURNER-HIRST, Contracts Coordinator:
➡️ “One of the best things about my role is that no two days are the same. My work ranges from monitoring KPIs and service level agreements to planning services across multiple sites.
But the best part is the people. Working with colleagues across SSUK and our contracting teams makes every day interesting.
For me, the idea of Give to Gain is simple — you get out what you put in.”
CHRISTINA HAROLD, HR Business Partner & Head of HR Shared Services:
➡️ “One of the things I value most in my role is sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues as they develop.
That’s why the International Women’s Day theme this year — Give to Gain — resonates with me. Throughout my career I’ve been fortunate to work with people who shared their experience and supported my development.
When people support each other and share what they know, everyone benefits.”
