Large-diameter machining is as much about the setup as the cutting itself. At 1,300mm in diameter and 750mm long, these king post bearings required careful handling and positioning at every stage. The machinists had to support each section correctly, work across a large curved surface and keep the machined features consistent from one operation to the next.
The manual milling work shown here called for particularly close control. Access inside the bearing was limited, while the size and shape of the component left little room for adjustment once machining began.
Massive congrats to Chris and Tom, who completed the turning on our Broadbent lathe, and Chris and Brad, who carried out the milling operations.
It's a great example of the practical skill involved in machining large composite bearings, particularly when the component cannot be approached like a standard production job.
