Sheffield University Stratosphere Programme (SunStratos) is a student-led research group within The University of Sheffield. It is a group of 21 undergraduates from various kinds of engineering. Our aim is to design a foldable wing mechanism to be incorporated into a High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) fixed-wing UAV which is bound by the space provided by its carrier. The UAV would be folded to fit within a 3U payload bay and be ejected at 9km apogee.
It all began from our leader Pranav Umesh's idea to conduct a personal research project. With the support of our supervisor, Dr Giuliano Punzo, it transformed into the student-led project. We would like to say many thanks to him for his invaluable help.
SunStratos is also part of the ; we are pleased to announce that we cooperate with SunrIde, another member of . The rocket they are building for project to compete in Spaceport America Cup 2021, will be used as a carrier for our drone. Apart from that, we will have a couple of launches in peaks, using high altitude balloons to lift up the UAV.
