Inclusive play is about more than access.

It’s about creating opportunities for every child to explore, move, take on challenges, play alongside others and find their own way to engage with the world.

Our recent visit to Ardnashee School and in Northern Ireland was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when play is prioritised and spaces are designed around the needs of the children who use them.

These are lessons that reach far beyond specialist settings. They should inform how we approach every playground, park and public space.

Stockton Waterfront Urban Park is a finalist in the Spaces Category at the inaugural National Play Awards tonight! 🏆

We are delighted to see this landmark park gain the recognition it deserves. It’s ambitious, inclusive and puts play and children at the heart of town-centre regeneration. 👏🏻

The project represents the coming together of thoughts, ideas and dreams from multiple stakeholders. Designed collaboratively by Timberplay and Ryder Architecture, the 28,000 square metre park reconnects Stockton with the River Tees through a landscape rich in adventure, exploration and discovery. 🍃

Three play areas, bespoke timber towers, sand and water play, sensory experiences, accessible routes and a central wheeled sports area create an inclusive destination with a varied offer, where children of all ages and abilities are welcomed.🤸🏻

The Power of Play For Every Child

For more than two decades, inclusivity has been at the heart of Timberplay’s approach to play.

Our relationships with Ardnashee School and Castle Tower School began more than ten years ago.

Our recent visit gave us the chance to see first-hand the impact that thoughtfully designed play can have for children with a broad range of additional needs.

But inclusive play isn’t just about specialist settings. It should be part of every play space we create.

Space to explore, sensory experiences, sand and water, movement and graduated challenge, child-led play, places to be active, play alongside others and find quiet when it’s needed.

At both schools, we saw how powerful the impact of these opportunities and prioritising play can be.

If you could change one thing tomorrow to make opportunities for play better, what would it be?

For the most recent episode of Play Attention, we brought together answers from guests across the series.

For Ash Perrin, Founder of it begins with how we see children.

Trust them, respect them and take seriously what they know, feel and understand.

And perhaps we should think about what children can teach us, about curiosity, creativity, risk and the freedom to play.

“We were kids and we are still kids, just big.”

📚 Books That Shaped Us

As part of our support for the National Year of Reading, we’re exploring the role that reading and play have in childhood, shaping our imagination, creativity and how we see the world.

For our second film, Timberplay Director Mark Grimshaw shares a book he’s read to his daughter hundreds of times, and one that may well shape her too. 📖 ✨

Filmed at the amazing which opened last weekend. 🌳

What’s a book you’ve loved sharing with the next generation?

What a weekend! 💫

Northern Roots officially opened its doors on Saturday, welcoming thousands of visitors to explore, play, eat, learn and celebrate this incredible new space in Oldham.

And there was plenty of playing to be done! Our play area was packed from day one, with children (and grown-ups!) making the most of it. 💚

A brilliant project with a big vision for people, planet and place. 🌱

From workshop to playground.

From the workshops in Frasdorf, Germany, to the galleon’s arrival in London, its incredible lift into place, and the moment children climbed aboard for the first time.

For Timberplay and Richter, there’s a special connection here. We’ve been involved with the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground since it was first created 25 years ago.

To return and help shape its next chapter has been a remarkable link between past and present. 🤸💫

You may have seen glimpses of the journey over the past few months. Now, we’ve brought it all together in one film.

A story of collaboration, craftsmanship and play.

When it comes to climbing, variety matters. Different heights, different challenges, different ways to move.

The more possibilities a play space offers, the more opportunities children have to push themselves, build confidence and move in ways that feel right for them.

If you’re looking for more ways to bring challenge and variety into your play space, get in touch.

Children need choices too.

Different places. Different ways to play. Different reasons to go there.

In this clip from Play Attention, Mike Barclay and Ben Tawil from explore the idea of a Web of Play, and why a network of accessible places can matter so much to children’s everyday opportunities to play.

But that’s just one part of a much bigger conversation about what children need to play, and what we could change to give them more opportunities to do it.
