We're on the road this October. First stop is the Made in the Midlands Expo on 8 October at the Pallet Track Stadium, Walsall FC. Second stop is the Made in Yorkshire Expo on 15 October at the Accu Stadium, Huddersfield. Both are free to attend for manufacturers, both run 9am to 3pm.

A mark is only useful if you can prove what it said.

Applying a code to a part is the start of the traceability chain. Confirming that code is readable, correct and on record is what makes the chain unbreakable.

Most production lines treat inspection as something that happens after marking. A separate camera. A separate step. A gap where a failed mark can slip through undetected and travel three operations into assembly before anyone notices.

Today is 18 August 2026. It's the date written into the EU Battery Regulation for harmonised labelling.

But it may not be the hard deadline it first appears.

Article 13 of the regulation sets two conditions: the labelling requirements apply from 18 August 2026 or 18 months after the Article 13(10) implementing act enters into force, whichever is later.

That implementing act, the harmonised specification for how battery labels must be formatted, was only published in draft in December 2025. Formal adoption was expected in Q2 2026. As of today, we haven't been able to confirm it's been published in the Official Journal. If it was adopted in, say, May 2026, the effective labelling deadline falls around November 2027, not today.

So if you've read that today was a fixed deadline, it's worth checking that position directly with the Official Journal or a compliance specialist before acting on it.

What is not conditional on any implementing act? 18 February 2027. The QR code on every battery, and the Digital Battery Passport for EV and industrial batteries above 2kWh, arrive on that date regardless. No safety clause. No implementing act trigger. Six months away.

And that QR code must be printed or engraved indelibly on the battery itself. Not a label. Not inkjet. Indelible. For the full service life of the battery.

That's where the real urgency sits. Specifying, procuring and integrating a laser marking system takes months. Building the data infrastructure to connect a physical mark to a Battery Passport record takes months. February 2027 is closer than it looks.

One more thing: the 'delays' you may have read about refer to the supply chain due diligence obligations (cobalt, lithium, nickel, graphite sourcing), which were pushed from August 2025 to August 2027 by Regulation (EU) 2025/1561. That delay has nothing to do with marking, labelling or the Battery Passport.

The part is traceable. The mark is not.

This is more common than most manufacturers realise.

You have the serial number in the ERP system. You have the production record. But on the physical component, the mark has faded, been painted over, corroded, the label has peeled off, or it was never readable to machine standards in the first place.

When that part comes back for warranty, MRO, or investigation, the data chain is broken. Not because your systems failed. Because the physical link between the data and the part no longer exists.

This is why mark quality matters as much as mark content. And why verification at source - grading the mark against ISO/IEC 15415 before the part leaves the marking station - is a process control step, not an optional quality check.

The mark is the anchor. Everything else in your traceability system hangs from it.

Fibre laser vs MOPA laser - which one do you actually need?

Both mark metal. Both are fast. Both produce permanent marks. But they aren't the same machine.

Fibre laser (standard):
- Fixed pulse width of 90-120 ns
- Fast, reliable, cost-effective
- Excellent for everyday serial numbers, part numbers, and Data Matrix codes on steel and stainless

MOPA laser:
- Pulse width independently adjustable from 2 to 500 ns
- High-contrast black marks on stainless steel
- Colour marking on anodised aluminium
- Better results on plastics - shorter pulse widths reduce heat input and prevent burn
- Deeper engraving where the application requires it

For most standard industrial marking applications, a fibre laser does everything you need. MOPA earns its extra cost when your application demands fine control over mark quality, or when you are working across materials with very different surface requirements.
