Portland Works

Portland Works Community owned industrial heritage building dating from 1879. Unique event space hire. Workshops for modern and tradition craftspeople. Sheffield UK

Portland Works is a community benefit society - saved by over 500 wonderful community shareholders. From steel forging to gin distilling, Portland people are a skilled bunch, practicing an array of traditional and contemporary making within a site of significant historical importance. Once an iconic cutlery factory, now a creative hive of affordable, restored and retrofitted workshops. The red bri

ck building is one of the oldest examples of a working metal trades factory. Built in 1879, the forge where stainless steel was originally produced - right here, in Sheffield - is still in daily use. The once neglected grade II* listed building is now in a state of continued renovation, steadily transforming a romantic ruin into a dynamic and interesting space fit for future generations of Sheffield makers.

The History of Sheffield’s Hospitals — Talk by Dr Jenny Stephenson
A compelling journey through the evolution of our city’s medical care
From Victorian infirmaries and voluntary hospitals to pioneering surgical centres and the creation of the NHS, Sheffield’s medical story is one of innovation, resilience, and deep community spirit. Many of the buildings have changed — but the legacy of care, struggle, and civic pride remains woven into the city’s fabric.

Join Dr Jenny Stephenson for a richly illustrated and expertly researched exploration of how Sheffield treated its people through industrial hardship, epidemics, wartime pressures, and sweeping social change. Expect surprising origins, forgotten institutions, and powerful human stories that shaped the hospitals we know today.
