May I please urge all heat pump installers to fully understand the importance of a valid EPC when homeowners wish to apply for the BUS grant. It is a legal requirement, and without it, customers risk becoming ineligible for funding.
Installers should strongly advise homeowners to arrange an EPC assessment before any installation begins, provided they do not already have a valid one.

In the past two weeks, I have been asked to carry out EPCs in situations where the timing created significant complications:
• In the first case, the heat pump had already been installed, meaning that entering it on the EPC would have made the property ineligible for the grant.
• In the second case, the gas boiler had already been removed and capped. With no heating system in place, the EPC rating was inevitably very low, regardless of insulation improvements.

You may have your opinions about the limitations of EPCs, but the requirement still stands. Please ensure you are familiar with the process and advise your clients appropriately.

Decarbonising Construction: Is Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) the only answer?

As the Government pushes for economic growth and ambitious housebuilding targets, demand for cement and concrete is set to rise. Cement is one of the world’s most carbon-intensive materials to produce, and the UK’s largest cement plant is located here in the Hope Valley.

That makes it more important than ever that we build responsibly - cutting emissions, using resources wisely, and staying within the limits of what the planet can sustain.

Breedon, the cement works operators, are investing in carbon capture and storage (CCS) to help reduce emissions, but not everyone agrees it’s the right or only path.

So what else can be done? From alternative materials and innovation to reducing demand, how do we move toward genuine decarbonisation and a fair transition that supports people, nature and the planet?

Join Hope Valley Climate Action (HVCA) for an evening of expert insight and discussion with:

Michael Lord, Senior Analyst (Industrial Decarbonisation), Climate Change Committee

Madeline Rihner, PhD Researcher, University of Sheffield and creator of Green Kid Comics

Together, we'll explore what a sustainable future for construction could look like – here in the Hope Valley and beyond.

This past year, we were incredibly busy conducting energy surveys for numerous Methodist churches across Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and the Manchester region. These surveys aimed to evaluate the energy and carbon efficiency of the churches, assessing their heating and ventilation systems and providing recommendations for improvements. A key focus was advising churches on the crucial steps they should take to achieve Net Zero targets, including guidance on the installation of renewables such as heat pumps and solar PV.

During these projects, we had the privilege of hearing inspiring stories about how communities have evolved around these churches and the immense challenges they face in today's environment. Most churches rely heavily on the dedication and tireless efforts of volunteers, often older members of the congregations who generously give their time and energy to serve their communities.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all those who have entrusted us with this important work. Your dedication and the opportunities you have provided us are deeply appreciated.
