Decarbonising Construction: Is Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) the only answer?
As the Government pushes for economic growth and ambitious housebuilding targets, demand for cement and concrete is set to rise. Cement is one of the world’s most carbon-intensive materials to produce, and the UK’s largest cement plant is located here in the Hope Valley.
That makes it more important than ever that we build responsibly - cutting emissions, using resources wisely, and staying within the limits of what the planet can sustain.
Breedon, the cement works operators, are investing in carbon capture and storage (CCS) to help reduce emissions, but not everyone agrees it’s the right or only path.
So what else can be done? From alternative materials and innovation to reducing demand, how do we move toward genuine decarbonisation and a fair transition that supports people, nature and the planet?
Join Hope Valley Climate Action (HVCA) for an evening of expert insight and discussion with:
Michael Lord, Senior Analyst (Industrial Decarbonisation), Climate Change Committee
Madeline Rihner, PhD Researcher, University of Sheffield and creator of Green Kid Comics
Together, we'll explore what a sustainable future for construction could look like – here in the Hope Valley and beyond.
