The first of two completed sections of the Tan House Bridge leaves the SH Structures Yorkshire facility.

The 26.5m long assembly was picked up by our haulage partner Collett Transport today and will be installed in Wokingham later in the year.

The 53m span footbridge will replace a temporary bridge that was recently removed from the Network Rail site in Berkshire. Spanning the Southwestern Rail and Great Western rail lines the new bridge has been a collaborative project between Network Rail and Wokingham Council.

Designed by WSP and Format Engineers the project is being led by principal contractor Balfour Beatty.

SH Structures were recently visited by MP Kier Mather. Kier has been out and about getting to know local businesses in his constituency.

He showed a great interest in the work we undertake and was keen to hear about issues which are causing concern within the steel sector.

Sales Director Tim Burton was able showcase the skills of our team and in particular our fabricators and welders who he was able to see first-hand working on one of our bridge projects.

Like most people who visit our works he was impressed by the amount of care and attention that goes into fabricating one of our complex steel structures.

The visit was organised by Zoe Williams of the BCSA who continue to champion our sector and lobby government for support in several areas.

SHS History: 2013 SH Structures win Construction News Specialist Contractor Award

Ten years ago, we were celebrating success at the Construction News Specialist Awards.

Meeting all the judges’ criteria which included innovation, commitment to health and safety and fertile relationships with our clients, we secured the Steelwork Specialist Category award.

We showcased several live or recent projects. These included the restoration and lifting of the historic Cutty Sark, the Kelpies public art scheme, and the Exeter University Forum Building timber grid shell roof.

Ten years have passed, and we would like to think we still meet the criteria and continue to provide our clients with a vast array of complex structures.

The 61m span cable stay bridge will link the town centre with the nearby transport interchange and other amenities. Replacing a former level crossing, the bridge is fully accessible with stairs and lifts at both ends.
Our work with main contractor Keltbray, includes the mast and cables, bridge span, stairs and lift towers complete with finishes including glazing/cladding and lighting.

SHS History: 2013 Olympic equipment helps with difficult site installation.

Many of us will remember the dramatic opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics in London. While we were watching the event, we did not expect that it would have an impact on SH Structures.

10 years ago, in October 2013 we were faced with the challenge of installing a tubular steel rooflight in Newcastle’s Eldon Square. The rooflight structure had to installed at night with the er****on team leaving the site clean and ready for the retail units to open the following morning. Finding an efficient safe method of installation was critical. As it was impossible to use a mobile crane all materials had to be taken to atrium via the main entrance of the mall.

Fortunately, the Olympic Delivery Authority were disposing of some of the equipment used in the opening ceremony. We were able to purchase several bespoke electric trollies which we adapted to safely carry the structural steelwork into place.

We feel this innovation falls into the ’thinking outside the box’ category.

Milford Place Pipe Bridge - Leeds

Another successful bridge installation by SH Structures.

The bridge was delivered to site in 2 sections, supported on timber sleepers & bolted together before being lifted onto the pre-installed bearings.

Forming part of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme this adds to the growing number of structures to be installed by SH Structures in Leeds.

Manufactured from weathering steel the 35m span pipe bridge uses a GRP maintenance walkway to access the galvanised & painted service ducts.

The bridge features ten steel silhouettes which provide a visual link to the Leeds Industrial Museum.

Doe Lea

SH Structures installed the Dancing Flowers Artwork on the approach to the Derbyshire village of Doe Lea in 2019. This is a great example of a small community project which was done in collaboration with our friends at Tonkin Liu Architects.

The 114mm Dia curved sections created, what appeared to be an abstract form which grew out of the wildflowers of the site. However, when viewed from the road, the name Doe Lea takes shape, announcing your arrival when approaching the village.

As a community-based project, local school children played their part designing the stencils used to decorate the brightly painted tubes.
