🚒 As a firefighter, this is one of the first things I look for on a solar roof
This type of fault is easy to miss...
But one that's far too important to ignore.
During a recent inspection, we identified a cracked solar panel that had gone unnoticed.........for a longgggg time
The system was still generating electricity,
The damage was permanent,
And the risk was high.
Cracked panel can lead to:
* Reduced energy generation
* Moisture ingress
* Corrosion of internal components
* Electrical faults
* Hotspots caused by uneven current flow
* Increased risk of arcing and, in rare cases, fire
The scary part?
Many cracked panels continue to produce power,
Giving owners a false sense of security
While the fault quietly develops.
Not every solar fault announces itself.
The most significant defects are only found through routine inspections.
That's why visual checks alone aren't always enough.
Visual inspection isn't enough
Temperature anomalies can't be seen with naked eye
If you own or manage a solar system, here's what I'd recommend:
✅ Carry out routine visual inspections
✅ Include periodic thermal imaging inspections to identify hotspots before they develop
✅ Investigate unexplained drops in system performance.
✅ Replace/Remove damaged panels promptly
✅ Treat inspections as preventative maintenance, not just fault finding.
As both a firefighter and someone who works with solar systems, I see inspections as being about far more than performance.
Yes, they help maximise energy generation.
But they also help identify faults before they become safety issues.
These issues are entirely preventable................. if they're found early enough.
