"I'd need to rip out all my radiators and put in underfloor heating, right?" Nope, another myth we hear all the time.

The truth is, most homes work just fine with their existing radiators. Heat pumps run at a slightly lower flow temperature than gas boilers, so occasionally a radiator or two might need upsizing to keep things cosy. But a full system rip-out? Almost never necessary.

"Aren't heat pumps really noisy?" Short answer: no.

A modern heat pump runs at around 40 decibels, which is quieter than your fridge humming away in the kitchen. To put that in context, a normal conversation sits around 60dB, and a dishwasher is closer to 50dB. You're more likely to hear the wind in the trees than the unit itself.

The old reputation for noisy heat pumps comes from older systems and poor installations. With the right kit, properly sited by an experienced installer, you genuinely won't notice it's there.

Thinking about a heat pump but not sure what help is out there? Here's the quick rundown of what UK homeowners can currently access.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is the big one. It gives you £7,500 off the cost of an air source or ground source heat pump if you're replacing a gas boiler. If your home runs on oil or LPG, that figure goes up to £9,000.
On top of that, heat pumps are VAT-free until March 2027, which saves most households another £1,000 to £2,500.
The grant is applied directly by your installer, so there's no forms for you to fill in or money to claim back. You just pay the reduced amount.

"Heat pumps don't work when it's cold." It's one of the most common things we hear — and it's just not true.

Modern heat pumps run reliably down to -15°C. That's colder than the UK gets on its worst winter night. And here's the kicker: heat pumps are the standard heating system across Norway, Sweden and Finland, where winters are properly brutal. If they can keep a home in Tromsø warm in February, they can handle a frosty morning in the Midlands.

The technology has come a long way. Today's units are built for real-world conditions, not lab tests.

Did you know heat pumps are currently VAT-free in the UK? That's a saving of 20% straight off your installation, no paperwork, no application, it's applied automatically by your installer. For most homes that works out to somewhere between £1,000 and £2,500 back in your pocket.

And when you stack it with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, the cost of switching to a heat pump starts looking a lot more manageable than people expect.

But there's a catch: the 0% VAT rate is only confirmed until 31 March 2027. After that it goes back up to 5%.
