Many people are asking the same question right now.
Why has heating oil gone up so much when petrol and diesel have not gone up in the same way?
If you rely on heating oil to keep your home warm, heat your water, or run your Aga or Range Cooker, it is completely understandable to feel worried and frustrated.
The simple answer is that heating oil is priced differently to road fuels.
Petrol and diesel are sold in much bigger volumes and have a much wider supply network. Heating oil comes from a smaller part of the fuel market, which means it can be affected much more quickly when there are problems with supply, transport or events happening around the world.
Heating oil is also closely linked to the same part of the market as jet fuel. So when that part of the market comes under pressure, heating oil prices can rise much faster than the prices people see on the forecourt. UKIFDA has recently made this same point in its consumer advice, and government data says aviation turbine fuel is generally sourced from the Middle East.
That is why heating oil can sometimes seem to go up much more quickly than petrol or diesel.
That does not make it any easier when you need to place an order.
But people do deserve a clear and honest explanation.
Many local heating oil distributors are facing these higher costs too. They are often not the cause of the increase, but they are the ones having to explain it to their customers.
At times like this, people deserve honest answers, clear information and a little more understanding.
Because when costs are rising, clarity really matters.
