You may have noticed we’ve been a bit quiet on the socials lately! 🤫 Since launching Rowson & Jones Renovations, we’ve been working hard quietly behind the scenes on a variety of exciting projects across the area. The level of support and enquiries has been off the charts, and we’ve been focused on delivering the high standard of work our clients expect. 📈
But today, we wanted to break the silence to highlight one particular project we’ve been helping with. We are currently working alongside Henley Padel as they navigate the technical stages of bringing premium Padel courts to Battlefield, Shrewsbury. 🎾

We first met Shey and Luke through our sister company, Men of Steel, two years ago. Luke is an out-and-out background expert in his trade; what started with a lifelong passion for tennis—from elite coaching to his 24/7 racket stringing service—has naturally evolved into this incredible Padel venture.

Working with him is like working with a "squirrel on Red Bull" 🐿️⚡—his energy is unmatched. Shey is the brilliant mind driving the vision forward, and together, they’ve put in years of hard work to get to this point.

The R&J Support Package 🏗️📋
While the vision is exciting, there is a mountain of detail required to make it a reality. We are currently providing a specialist support package to help Henley Padel manage the crucial fine details:

• Accessibility for All: Ensuring the sport is inclusive and safe for every member of the Shrewsbury community.
• Safety & Compliance: Expertly navigating the complex requirements for fire safety and building regulations.
• The Blueprint: Collaborating with local architects and structural engineers to ensure a professional, premium environment.

We are hopeful to be the ones bringing this dream to life from a building perspective when the time comes. For now, we’re proud to be part of the professional team laying the groundwork for two of the hardest-working people we know.
Their train is leaving the station, and we are thrilled to be on the platform with them. 🚂💨

Please head over to and and show them the same local love you’ve shown us!

Santley Farm: The Restoration 🏡✨

With the internal building work finished, the garden was in desperate need of a recovery. 🏗️ We looked to the outdoors to finally connect the home with its surroundings with the help of 🌳

* Architectural Vision: Our in-house designer, Dan Jones, led the way by integrating the house design with the landscape, creating a seamless flow from the inside out. 📐✨

* The View: We installed a large picture window at the top of the stairs to frame the Stiperstones. 🏔️🖼️

* The Flow: We replaced windows in the kitchen and living room with French doors, opening onto an extensive Indian sandstone patio. 🚪🥂

* The Hardscape: Dan also designed and built the tiered patio, including a custom spot for the hot tub. 🫧💧

* The Exterior: The property was finished with a full re-roof and a sharp, clean render by Mr Smooth. 🏠👷‍♂️

* The Recovery: A huge special mention goes to my Dad Gary Rowson , who spent hours weeding and planting to bring the garden back to life after the chaos of the renovation. 👨‍🌾🌻

It was a massive journey, but seeing the house finally embrace those views made it all worth it. 🙌💫

A massive shout out to for dressing the area and the incredible for the amazing photos of the house and garden . They gave us a new aspect that we hadn't seen our work from before and we love it! 📷📸

Shrewsbury Homeowner’s Guide: Permitted Development (PD)

Thinking of extending? In Shrewsbury, you can often bypass full planning permission for certain projects. However, our town's rich heritage means "standard" rules don’t always apply! 🏗️

📏 The Standard Rules (Rear Extensions)

• Depth Limits: You can build across the full width of your rear wall. The max depth is 4m for detached houses and 3m for all others. 📐

• The 8m Rule: Under "Prior Approval," you can double these depths to 8m (detached) or 6m (others). This involves a 42-day council check with your neighbours. 🏠💨

• Height Restrictions: Max height is 4m. If you are within 2m of your boundary, eaves are capped at 3m. 🧱

• Land Coverage: Your extension + sheds cannot exceed 50% of your total garden space. 🌳

🏰 The "Shrewsbury Catch": Conservation & Article 4
If you live in a Conservation Area or a Listed Building, PD rights are often restricted. In areas like Belle Vue, Castlefields, Cherry Orchard, and Mountfields, "Article 4 Directions" may require permission for:

• Any extension (front, side, or rear) 🧱

• Changing windows or doors 🪟

• Replacing roof materials or removing chimneys 💨

💡 Crucial Tip: Even if you meet the rules, always apply for a Lawful Development Certificate. It’s your "legal insurance" for when you eventually sell! 📄✅

The Ultimate Family Upgrade 🏠✨
With growing family's, every square inch of the home matters. We completed this double garage transformation, turning one big empty space into four high-functioning zones designed for busy daily life without compromising much needed storage space.
By listening to exactly what this family needed, it gave us the breif to design them exactly what they needed.

• A Private Downstairs Bedroom: A bright, quiet sanctuary with custom mood lighting disgusing services which would be expensive to move.

• A Modern En-suite: A high-spec shower room with underfloor heating to take the pressure off the family bathroom.

• A Bespoke Utility Room: Solid oak worktops and clever shelving to keep the laundry (and the noise!) out of the kitchen.

• Retained Storage: We kept a dedicated section of the garage for the family’s bikes, tools, and garden gear.

This project is a perfect example of how clever design can make a home work harder for the people living in it.

Luxury meets heritage at Santley Farm House. 🚜✨

Another snapshot of our work on Santley Farm house.
We had the pleasure of creating this bespoke master suite—a project where structural engineering met high-end design.

The challenge? Preserving a stunning original oak roof truss. By installing 4.6m RSJs between the floor joists, we created a solid foundation for the new layout while keeping the home's history front and center.

The Highlights:
🛁 The Centerpiece: A freestanding bath on a custom plinth (engineered to keep pipework hidden!).

🍷 The Details: Ambient lighting and an etched tile niche—the ultimate spot for a glass of wine.

🚿 Modern Living: Industrial-style floating sink and a spacious walk-in shower.

👣 Pure Comfort: Engineered oak flooring with underfloor heating.

The Dream Team:
🎨 Design:
🔧 Plumbing & Suite:
📐 Layout & Practicality:

From structural steel to the final tile, the Rowson & Jones team followed the vision to a T. The result? A master suite that feels like a true sanctuary.

One of our biggest transformations to date. 🔨
This has been our largest project so far, and while we have so much to show you from across the property, we wanted to start in the kitchen—the new heart of the home.

This room is a showcase of every trade we work with, from our in-house team to our trusted subcontractors Adam Franklin. Every person on this site was vetted and tested to ensure the final product is as stunning as the photos suggest.

The Reality: This barn was gradually falling down, hidden by years of DIY patchwork. We didn’t realize the extent of the damage until we stripped it back to find crumbled brickwork and rotting oak supports.
The Solution: Working with our structural engineer, we began the rescue mission:
• Installed two new 4.6m RSJ beams under the original oak trusses.
• Transferred the load through the first floor via 150mm supporting studs.
• Poured a reinforced concrete slab to build a "house within a house."

With a new "skeleton" in place, a top-tier underfloor heating system from , and faultless plastering, we created the perfect canvas for the unbelievable to work her magic. Her interior design created a chic, cozy country kitchen, finished photos captured perfectly by .
This was a massive feat of engineering and design. Pat yourselves on the back, lads and ladies—this is the definition of smashing it! 🥂

A Blast from our Past: The Project That Changed Everything 🏠✨
This one holds a special place in our hearts.
When we first started pricing this job, I’ll be honest—I genuinely didn't think we’d get it. At the time, Dan and I didn't have a massive portfolio to prove we could deliver such an ambitious design. But the owners saw something in us. They put their faith in us, and that is something we are still incredibly grateful for today.
The clients are the owners of an unbelievable company that has been deeply rooted in the Shrewsbury and Shropshire building trade for 50 years. They have contacts galore and contractors who would have snapped at the chance to build this extension—yet they chose us.
This house had even more meaning as it was a family home bought from the owner's father. The goal was to modernize this "memory box" so it could continue being a family home for years to come, just with a bit more sparkle.
The Build:
Our favorite RSJ install is the star of the show here! It allowed us to remove three-quarters of the original back wall, opening the house into a vast timber-frame extension. This created space for a cozy snug, a beautiful dining area, and an absolutely jaw-dropping kitchen. We tucked a large utility and downstairs toilet behind the remaining original wall to keep the flow seamless.
With the roof lantern and massive bifold doors leading to the stunning decking, the space is flooded with natural light. I’ve been lucky enough to head back for a beer and a BBQ since, and seeing how well the extension feels "in the real world" is just stunning.
We can’t thank the owners enough for their trust. From Friday beers and plates of sandwiches to barrels of laughs, this project gave us more than just a portfolio piece—it gave us lifelong friends.

A Look Back: Small Extension, Big Difference! 🛠️
We’re reflecting on this remarkable project in Shrewsbury where we added a rear extension to create the ultimate modern living space.
To achieve this "open-air" feel, we fitted an RSJ across the entire back of the house and removed the rear wall. This allowed us to merge the new extension with the existing home, creating a spacious family area flooded with natural light.
Key Features of this Build:
• The Extension: A bespoke build to maximize square footage and family living space.
• Light & Air: We installed large bifold doors and a striking roof lantern, making the room feel bright and airy all year round.
• The Flow: LVT flooring provides a seamless transition from the original house into the new extension.
• The Finish: Stunning granite worktops that add a touch of elegance to the kitchen.
It’s amazing how a well-planned extension can completely change your home!

The Key to Unlocking More Space: It's Easier Than You Think! 🔑
Here in Shrewsbury, many homes especially around the Sundorne and Copthorne area feature that familiar layout: a narrow galley kitchen, hallway and two reception rooms with one room right next door to the kitchen. The removal of dividing walls between a kitchen and a reception room is probably one of our most common call for structural alterations, and the difference it makes is huge!
Our solution? We remove the dividing wall. This simple change allows you to reposition the kitchen along the external wall, instantly creating a functional, open space.
This gives you the flexibility for:
🍽️ A dedicated dining area attached to the kitchen.
📺 A snug/TV area where you can watch the kids play or do homework while cooking.
With French doors already in place on this project, the room extends beautifully into the garden—a true extension in the summer!
We love seeing our clients get involved! The clients on this particular job were very hands-on, choosing to do a self-fit kitchen install to manage their budget. We were more than impressed with their first-ever attempt—it looks fantastic!
If you're ready to make your house feel bigger and more usable, give us a call!
