How to combine a heat pump with your existing boiler

In heat pump land anything is possible, a heat pump can be the only heat source or it can be combined with pretty much any other heat source, even a kettle. Its all down to the imagination of your designer.

We have all been there, you get home and the house is a bit cold, someone, (I'm pointing no fingers) goes to the thermostat and winds it up to 30 degrees C. M "why have you done that"? F "I'm cold".

Try a heat pump at home this weekend for NOTHING. I've posted this idea before but this weekend is perfect so I'm doing it again. It looks like its going to be cold.

So if you are a heat pump denier or have temperature anxiety this weekend its your chance to prove me wrong (or right). please do tell me how you get on.

When you get home tonight go to the boiler, set the water and the heating temperature to a maximum of 50 degrees C. That's the temperature my heat pump will be running at this weekend.

Now turn all the room stats up to 21 degrees C and set the heating to be on constant, no time clocks please this weekend.
My heat pump runs 24/7 at a fixed 21 degree room temperature in winter.

now sit back pour a glass of wine and see how you get on.

If you are cold your house would need a fair bit of modification to the heating system to make it heat pump ready. If you are warm you are already heat pump ready. That's it, that's all there is to it.

A heat pump is just a boiler that lives in the garden it just runs a bit cooler and for longer. There is quite literally nothing complicated about it at all. Welcome to renewables and a pollution free future.
