👷🏻♂️⚡️Garden Electrics - More To It Than You May Think……
It’s the time of year when people think about their gardens and how nice they look when they’re all lit up at night…. We totally agree, and a thoughtfully lit garden absolutely transforms your outdoor living space.
We regularly come across non-compliant electrical installations in a lot of gardens, and many of them have been poorly installed and are genuinely dangerous. (Take a look at some of the pics from recent enquiries that we’ve attached to this post)
Outdoor electrics are not the same as indoor electrics. Under BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), garden and outdoor installations must meet stricter safety requirements due to increased risks from moisture and water ingress, mechanical damage, UV exposure, ground movement, and increased shock risk to name a few.
Common issues we find include incorrect cable types buried in / over the ground, lack of RCD protection, inadequate earthing and bonding, non-IP rated fittings and joints, and unsafe DIY installations.
Using a qualified electrician is essential, but it is just as important to use one with proven experience in outdoor and garden installations.
Not every electrician regularly works outdoors. Garden electrics require a working knowledge of how BS 7671 applies specifically to external environments, including correct selection of cable types suitable for burial or external use, understanding IP ratings and why a lot of fittings fail prematurely outdoors, correct burial depths, mechanical protection and routing of cables, proper RCD protection, isolation and discrimination, earthing systems and how external conditions affect them, and testing methods appropriate for outdoor circuits.
Without this experience, installations may appear fine on day one but deteriorate rapidly, creating hidden dangers over time.
We often see work that was installed by a ‘qualified electrician’ or a ‘really good electrician’, but quite often, not one experienced in robust outdoor standards. The result is an installation that works for a short duration and then fails. These installations do not comply with BS 7671 and pose real safety risks.
If your garden has lighting, power sockets, water features, sheds or outbuildings, EV chargers or hot tubs, it is worth having it checked by an electrician who understands outdoor installations inside and out.
If you think the above may be applicable to your installation such as tripping circuits, flickering lights, exposed cables, poorly protected fittings or old installations, get in touch. We would be pleased to give you our professional appraisal and let you know exactly where you stand.
When it comes to garden electrics, “good enough” is not good enough. Safety always comes first.
Stay safe. Stay compliant.
Cost is quite rightly a concern.
However, it is worth pointing out that in most cases having work done cheaply leads to failure if it is not installed correctly in the first place. This can leave you repeatedly repairing or patching a poor installation that keeps failing, rather than having it done once and done right.
Poorly installed jobs can and often do cost the homeowner hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds in corrective remedial work or new installation work.
