📢Atlas Coating - The Five Stages of Pre-Treatment 📢
At the start of November, we discussed the importance of pre-treatment within the powder coating process.
We have our own bespoke process here at Atlas Coating, which we want to share with you to display how serious we are about pre-treatment.
It's vital to remember that your end product is only as good as the pre-treatment process! Here's how we do it at Atlas Coating:
📌Stage 1 – Degreaser (Alkali cleaner)
The first stage of our powder coating pre-treatment is degreasing with an alkaline cleaner, which removes contaminants from the part's surface.
📌Stage 2 - Water rinse (Mains water)
The second stage is a mains water rinse that removes any remaining iron phosphate solution or loose debris from the surface of the material being coated. This essential rinse ensures that the surface is ready for the next rinsing stage.
📌Stage 3 - Water rinse (Deionized water)
The deionized (DI) water rinse is the third stage in our process. It removes any remaining chemicals or contaminants from the surface, helping to avoid salt deposits and providing a clean surface for coating.
📌Stage 4 – Oxsilan (Conversion coating)
Oxsilan is stage four, and it is a conversion coating technology we use to improve corrosion resistance and paint adhesion. It is a silane-based process that creates a thin layer of polysiloxanes on the metal surface. This layer chemically bonds to the metal and paint coating and can provide the same level of corrosion protection as a ten-times thicker zinc-phosphate coating.
📌Stage 5 - Water rinse (Deionized water)
The final pre-treatment rinse stage before drying and coating is done with deionized (DI) water (the same as stage 3) to remove any remaining chemicals and salt deposits. Deionized water is preferred over tap water because it improves coating quality and reduces the need for pre-treatment chemicals.
