ON THIS DAY | In 1996, the US Postal Service issued a special “Computer Technology” stamp to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ENIAC, one of the world’s first general-purpose electronic computers.

Unveiled at the Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground, the stamp paid tribute to the pioneers who helped launch the computer age, featuring a brain overlaid with circuit board elements and binary code.

Fittingly, the stamp itself was designed entirely on a computer, celebrating both the origins of modern computing and the technology it helped inspire.

Mitch Kapor and Bill Joy were named MVPs of the inaugural contest, earning places on the all-star team.
