A few weeks at Wilson-Senior Engineering 🏗️

It’s been another varied few weeks at WSE, with projects ranging from major industrial construction and structural due diligence through to bespoke residential engineering.

One of the highlights has been seeing the structural steelwork taking shape on a gas-fired power generation project we’ve been heavily involved with. There’s something particularly satisfying about watching the design, analysis, coordination and site problem-solving finally turn into steelwork on the ground.

Alongside the industrial work, we’ve recently completed a series of detailed structural due-diligence inspections of existing commercial properties.

Our approach combines zoned inspection plans, individually referenced and mapped photographic records, 3D survey information, crack and moisture investigation, level/alignment checks and targeted inspection of concealed construction — providing a clear and traceable record from the initial site inspection through to the final engineering assessment.

Back at the design desk, we’ve also been working on something a little different — a new first-floor residential balcony with a frameless glass balustrade.

The finished structure should look relatively simple. The engineering behind it is anything but! 😄

The design has involved detailed 3D structural analysis of the steel grillage, cantilever behaviour, imposed and glass loading, wind actions, member forces, deflections, support reactions and the transfer of those loads safely back into the existing building.

And continuing the slightly less conventional residential theme, structural design is progressing on a home gym and golf simulator, incorporating a large vaulted simulator space, extensive glazing and the structural alterations required to turn the architectural concept into something that can actually be built.

Throw in ongoing civils, drainage, foundations, ground investigation and site engineering support, and it’s certainly been a busy few weeks.

It’s also a pretty good snapshot of why we enjoy what we do at WSE.

One day we’re standing on a major industrial site watching steelwork go up.

The next we’re investigating an existing building.

And the next we’re figuring out how to engineer a glass balcony or a rather serious home golf simulator. 😂

Four weeks at Wilson-Senior Engineering… 👷‍♂️

Sometimes it’s only when you look back that you realise quite how much has happened.

The last four weeks have seen WSE working across everything from major industrial and energy projects to existing building assessments and bespoke residential structures.

A snapshot of what’s been keeping us busy:

⚙️ Industrial structural engineering
Continued design and site engineering support on a major acoustic enclosure project, working through foundations, steelwork, precast interfaces, underground services, drainage, cable infrastructure and the inevitable challenges that only appear once construction gets underway.

🏭 Existing industrial structures
Completion of an extensive multi-level structural condition assessment, combining detailed site inspections, condition mapping, drawing production and analytical model reconciliation to establish a much clearer picture of the existing structure.

⚡ Energy infrastructure
Supporting the development of civil and structural proposals for significant energy-sector projects — including foundation and steelwork concepts, access structures, pipework supports and constructability input during the early design stages.

🌍 Ground investigation & foundation engineering
Developing and reviewing intrusive investigation scopes, desk studies, borehole and trial-pit arrangements, testing requirements and foundation strategies — including assessing whether major existing foundations can be safely incorporated into new development.

🏗️ New structural design
Steel frames, beams, columns, foundations and structural alterations across commercial and residential projects — taking schemes from concept through analysis and calculation to practical, buildable details.

🔎 Property acquisition due diligence
Detailed desk studies followed by targeted structural inspections of existing properties, looking beyond the surface condition to understand structural form, alterations, movement, moisture, ground risk and the implications for prospective purchasers and lenders.

And amongst all of that… plenty of calculations, drawings, site queries, Teams calls, redesigns and cups of coffee.

One of the things we enjoy most about WSE is the variety.

One day we’re considering the behaviour of a major industrial structure.

The next we’re standing in a 100-year-old building trying to work out exactly what previous generations have altered — and whether we like it. 😂

🏗️ ⛳ Busy Few Weeks at Wilson-Senior Engineering Ltd

The last few weeks have been incredibly busy across a range of civil and structural engineering projects throughout the North East and beyond.

Our team has been heavily involved in:

✅ Large-scale industrial structural inspections and asset condition assessments

✅ Ground investigations, utility mapping and enabling works packages for major infrastructure developments

✅ Structural design of acoustic enclosures, foundations, reinforced concrete structures and steelwork solutions

✅ Site surveys, clash detection and constructability reviews to help clients de-risk projects before construction begins

✅ Supporting clients through tendering, procurement and technical due diligence

As always, our focus remains on delivering practical engineering solutions, clear communication and adding value wherever we can.

It’s been fantastic to see several projects moving from concept and feasibility stages into construction, with others progressing through detailed design and site delivery.

Last week at Wilson-Senior Engineering Ltd was another busy one, with a range of structural engineering work progressing across several projects.

A major focus was the analysis and optimisation of a GRP platform structure, modelled in Tekla Structural Designer. Due to the relatively low modulus of elasticity of pultruded GRP compared to steel, serviceability (deflection) governed the design, requiring careful review of beam spacing and member sizing to achieve acceptable performance. After several iterations we progressed a revised scheme using increased GRP beam density, allowing the structure to remain fully composite while meeting deflection limits.

Alongside this, we also worked on several other packages:

• Development of steel support frame calculations for cable infrastructure within an industrial tunnel system.

• Preparation and issue of structural calculation packages and sketches to support fabrication detailing.

• Continued coordination with fabricators and draughting teams to ensure efficient, buildable solutions.

• Early-stage engineering input on additional industrial steelwork projects progressing through design.

It’s always rewarding when detailed analysis and engineering judgement come together to unlock a practical solution.

How we work at Wilson-Senior Engineering (WSE)

At WSE we don’t operate on a traditional “bums on seats” contractor model.

Instead, we take on defined engineering packages on a fixed-price basis — we scope them, quote them, and deliver them end-to-end.

That approach benefits our clients because it properly aligns incentives:
• It’s in our interest to deliver efficiently and to a high standard
• We’re motivated to finish cleanly and move on to the next project
• Clients get clarity on scope, cost, programme, and accountability
• No hours burned for the sake of it, and no drifting ownership

We deliver full engineering packages, typically including:
• Structural / civil design calculations
• Global analysis and modelling using Tekla Structural Designer (TSD)
• Member, connection, and foundation design using Tekla Tedds
• Accompanying sketches and drawings suitable for construction and approval

We hold our own TSD and Tedds licences and deliver independently, without reliance on client systems.

Our portfolio spans heavy-industry, energy, and complex retrofit work — including steel acoustic enclosures, industrial structures, GRP and steel access platforms, secondary steelwork, and bespoke commercial alterations. Much of our work involves live sites, constrained geometry, and interfaces with existing structures, where clear engineering judgement and efficient delivery really matter.

For recruiters: if you introduce work that results in a package being awarded to WSE, your fee can simply be added to our quoted package price. It keeps things simple, transparent, and aligned with how we deliver projects.

The past few months have been a busy and productive period for Wilson-Senior Engineering Ltd, delivering civil and structural engineering support across a range of live packages — from early-stage feasibility and design development through to calculation reports, detailing support, and buildable construction advice.

Recent work has included:

• Industrial and energy-sector civils & structures – delivering practical design solutions for foundations and structural elements to support plant and associated infrastructure.

• Plant and equipment foundations – supporting the safe installation of heavy equipment with robust, buildable foundation design and clear engineering deliverables.
