Last week at Wilson-Senior Engineering Ltd was another busy one, with a range of structural engineering work progressing across several projects.

A major focus was the analysis and optimisation of a GRP platform structure, modelled in Tekla Structural Designer. Due to the relatively low modulus of elasticity of pultruded GRP compared to steel, serviceability (deflection) governed the design, requiring careful review of beam spacing and member sizing to achieve acceptable performance. After several iterations we progressed a revised scheme using increased GRP beam density, allowing the structure to remain fully composite while meeting deflection limits.

Alongside this, we also worked on several other packages:

• Development of steel support frame calculations for cable infrastructure within an industrial tunnel system.

• Preparation and issue of structural calculation packages and sketches to support fabrication detailing.

• Continued coordination with fabricators and draughting teams to ensure efficient, buildable solutions.

• Early-stage engineering input on additional industrial steelwork projects progressing through design.

It’s always rewarding when detailed analysis and engineering judgement come together to unlock a practical solution.

How we work at Wilson-Senior Engineering (WSE)

At WSE we don’t operate on a traditional “bums on seats” contractor model.

Instead, we take on defined engineering packages on a fixed-price basis — we scope them, quote them, and deliver them end-to-end.

That approach benefits our clients because it properly aligns incentives:
• It’s in our interest to deliver efficiently and to a high standard
• We’re motivated to finish cleanly and move on to the next project
• Clients get clarity on scope, cost, programme, and accountability
• No hours burned for the sake of it, and no drifting ownership

We deliver full engineering packages, typically including:
• Structural / civil design calculations
• Global analysis and modelling using Tekla Structural Designer (TSD)
• Member, connection, and foundation design using Tekla Tedds
• Accompanying sketches and drawings suitable for construction and approval

We hold our own TSD and Tedds licences and deliver independently, without reliance on client systems.

Our portfolio spans heavy-industry, energy, and complex retrofit work — including steel acoustic enclosures, industrial structures, GRP and steel access platforms, secondary steelwork, and bespoke commercial alterations. Much of our work involves live sites, constrained geometry, and interfaces with existing structures, where clear engineering judgement and efficient delivery really matter.

For recruiters: if you introduce work that results in a package being awarded to WSE, your fee can simply be added to our quoted package price. It keeps things simple, transparent, and aligned with how we deliver projects.

The past few months have been a busy and productive period for Wilson-Senior Engineering Ltd, delivering civil and structural engineering support across a range of live packages — from early-stage feasibility and design development through to calculation reports, detailing support, and buildable construction advice.

Recent work has included:

• Industrial and energy-sector civils & structures – delivering practical design solutions for foundations and structural elements to support plant and associated infrastructure.

• Plant and equipment foundations – supporting the safe installation of heavy equipment with robust, buildable foundation design and clear engineering deliverables.

• Acoustic / noise-abatement structural solutions – integrating new structural elements with existing assets, with a strong focus on constructability and minimizing disruption.

🚧 Project Update from Wilson-Senior Engineering 🚧

We’ve recently completed the design of a new steel structure and its supporting foundations, all modelled and coordinated in Tekla Structural Designer.

A key challenge on this project has been keeping foundation pressures within a strict 100 kN/m² bearing capacity limit, as piling wasn’t an option due to the live nature of the site. Careful optimisation of pad and strip foundations allowed us to deliver a safe, efficient and fully buildable solution.
