Matthew Hobson and Frank Giecco recently appeared on What Lies Beneath on ITV. πŸ“Ί
Matthew talks about the Roman cremation cemetery in Carlisle where our archaeologists excavated beneath the city centre. The finds showed us an important study of burials and identity in the region. Frank talks about finds that have been unearthed at the Cricket Club excavations as part of β€˜Uncovering Roman Carlisle’, an award-winning project that we have been supporting since 2017. πŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈ

World Soil Day focuses our attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. 🌍

Protecting soil health and effectively managing the agricultural land that soils support is central to global food security. In the UK, a valuable tool that we have for understanding and protecting both soils and food security are the Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) system, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Land Classification for Agriculture system (LCA) in Scotland. These classification systems provide a standardised approach to identifying the soils and land that contribute the most to putting food on the table. 🌱

We need land to build more homes, and we also need land to support other important public needs such as green energy production. The ALC and LCA systems allow us to set priorities in the planning process to ensure that we protect the most valuable soils. βœ…

A monumental Severan building has been discovered at 'Uncovering Roman Carlisle' πŸ›

We have developed a better understanding of the Severan building with its northern limit now confirmed and evidence of a possible portico discovered along the southern side of the building making it the largest building discovered to date on the Northern frontier and of a unique design to the province of Britannia. βš’

Our archaeologists have been working with a team of volunteers who have contributed +1,200 person days this season and developed an extremely well received training program. Our engagement with the local community has involved over 30 presentations and included +1,000 school children visiting the site to make this another very successful season. πŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈ πŸ‘·β€β™€οΈ

Further to our work on the ongoing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) surveys for the proposed Cair Vie windfarm, we are supporting Manx Utilities (MUA) by undertaking public engagement events on the Isle of Man.

Wardell Armstrong have been commissioned to undertake the feasibility, planning, design and EIA works for the proposed windfarm, with the submission of planning expected early in 2025. πŸ—Ί

The intention of these public events is to provide residents with greater detail of the proposals and hear feedback from residents. Several of our specialists and MUA senior officers will be on hand to talk with and hear the views of locals about the project. Feedback from these consultation events will also help to shape the proposals which will be taken forward to the planning application stage. The events will also include a virtual reality experience where residents can view what the windfarm will look like from vantage points in the south of the island.

The 8 public engagement events are being held from 19th-27th October - please click the link below for more details πŸ‘‡

A new link road has created a better connection between Lytham St Annes and the M55 by relieving congestion on smaller local roads and supporting the commercial viability of local housing and business development sites. βœ… 🏘

The design and construction of the link road route presented several technical challenges including poor ground conditions, environmental and ecological constraints, an extensive flood plain, two main river crossings, the presence of existing strategic utilities and constrained land availability. πŸ›£ Through effective inter-disciplinary working between our Civil, Geotechnical and Structural Engineers, we were able to assist in delivering an economical road corridor design to the satisfaction of the client, associated stakeholders and adopting Highway Authority πŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈ πŸ‘·β€β™€οΈ

Construction work has begun on a Β£32m Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station in Walsall. βœ… A workshop and reuse shop will also be built for staff to refurbish items that would otherwise have been thrown away and will then be sold. β™»

We've been involved with this project since the feasibility stage, and have continued to be post planning approval, including assisting with contractor procurement and managing the design contract with Morgan Sindall Group plc, and finalising the build contract. Since April, we have been the Client Project Manager, Supervisor and Owners Engineer for the construction. πŸ‘·β€β™€οΈπŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈ

We were recently commissioned to prepare an Indoor Air Quality Plan to accompany a planning application for warehouse units and supporting infrastructure at Indurent Park Trident, Warrington. 🏒

We spend a lot of our time indoors, and the quality of the air that we breathe indoors can impact our health. Poor indoor air quality can result in a range of health issues, from allergies and asthma to more serious conditions like respiratory infections and cardiovascular disease. ❀️

Our assessment involved a review of procedures for diluting and controlling contaminant sources in the building via management of the ventilation strategy, pre-occupancy flush-out and purge ventilation as well as requirements for a programme of Air Quality Testing to be undertaken following completion and fit-out, but prior to occupancy. 🌬

We were asked by Miller Homes to undertake a Building Recording of a Grade II Listed Gravestone on their site in Merseyside: the Gravestone for Blackie – the War Horse. 🐎 This was followed by the restoration of the gravestone, Interpretation Board, Heritage Statement and archaeological fieldwork on the Site.

🏑 Residents worked with Miller Homes to improve the site with a new public path to the restored grave and by planting wildflower meadows and native shrubs and trees. A new two-metre-high carved statue was completed by award-winning sculptor Simon O’Rourke and unveiled at a tribute ceremony earlier this month, and the gravestone remains Grade II status. 🐴

Senior Acoustics Consultant, Conor O'Brien has recently been awarded β€˜best project report by a student studying for the Institute of Acoustics diploma’ for his first of its kind investigation into the acoustic properties of horse skulls. πŸ‘

Connors' research looked at the placement of horse skulls, which had been found under the floorboards of buildings dating roughly to the 1800s. It had previously been noted that horse skulls had been placed under floorboards to improve the acoustics of a room and give it an echo when people were dancing. πŸ’ƒ 🎢
