The household energy price cap rose on 1 July, but that does not mean everybody will pay the same amount.

Your actual bill still depends on how much energy you use, where you live and how you pay. People already on fixed tariffs are not affected by this particular increase until their fixed deal ends.

I am often asked whether switching is complicated or whether Utility Warehouse is only about energy.

It is not just an energy company, and the process is usually much more straightforward than people expect once I explain what happens.

The first step is simply looking at what you already have and whether there may be a better or easier way to manage it.

Do you know exactly how many meters your business is paying for?

I recently renewed a care home’s energy contracts for another three years and still managed to save them money.

While I was reviewing everything, I also found another meter on the site that had gone out of contract, so I was able to get that sorted too.

This is more common than people might think, especially where there are several buildings, sites or renewal dates involved.

You do not need to have everything perfectly organised before speaking to me.

Helping businesses work out what they have and what might have been missed is often where I start.

You might start seeing plug in solar panels appearing in the shops now.

From today, households in Great Britain can legally use them, which makes them a much more accessible option than traditional rooftop solar for some people.

The Government says a compliant system could provide up to 20% of an average household’s electricity use and save up to £110 a year.

For some homes, that could be really useful.

One thing to bear in mind is that the electricity they generate is most useful when you are actually using power at the same time. The Government gives examples such as running a fridge, TV, Wi Fi router, laptop and phone charger while the sun is shining.

So your own routine matters too. If your home is empty for most of the day, the benefit may look quite different from a household using more electricity during daylight hours.

Where the panel can be positioned matters as well, and depending on the property you may still need permission from a landlord, freeholder or planning authority.

If rooftop solar has never felt practical for your property, though, this could be an interesting option to look into.

The UK government claimes panels could help homes "significantly cut" energy bills.

A bank holiday can mean three quiet days for one business and its busiest weekend of the month for another.

For businesses with several sites, the picture can be even more complicated.

One location may be closed while another is using more energy than usual.

I can look after multiple sites together and help organise the contracts and renewal dates so they are easier to manage.

Where possible, we may also be able to bring them onto one renewal date in future.

Ofgem has confirmed today that the energy price cap will rise by 4% from 1 October.

At the same time, VAT is being removed from electricity bills.

Which sounds a bit contradictory.

The reason is that the saving on electricity is being outweighed by higher wholesale gas costs.

For households, that means the 4% headline does not tell you exactly what will happen to your own bill. Your usage still matters, as does the tariff you are on.

And if you are a business, the domestic price cap is not really your number anyway.

Commercial energy contracts work differently, so the more useful thing is to understand what is happening with your own contract, when it ends and what your options look like when you come to renew.

Because two people can read the same headline and be in completely different positions.

Closing your workplace for the bank holiday weekend?

Take a meter reading before you leave and another when you return.

Some energy use will be essential, but the difference can still show how much the building consumes while nobody is working there.

It may also highlight equipment or even a meter you had forgotten about.

A simple check can sometimes uncover much more than expected.

Two energy quotes can look similar while covering completely different things.

They may use different consumption figures, contract lengths, standing charges or numbers of meters.

Not every broker has access to the same suppliers and prices either.

Staying with your existing supplier may be the right choice, but it should not simply be assumed.

The goal is to compare the full offer properly and understand what you are agreeing to.

August can be quieter for many businesses, but September often brings everyone back.

That may mean more staff, longer hours, busier production and higher energy use.

The increase itself is not necessarily a concern if you understand why it happened.

The bigger problem is when businesses have several meters or sites and nobody is completely sure which contract ends when.

Helping get all of that organised is a big part of what I do.

Absolutely heartbreaking to see the devastation caused by the fires across Stourbridge and the surrounding areas yesterday 💔

My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected, especially those who were evacuated from their homes and are now facing such a frightening and uncertain time

A huge thank you to our incredible emergency services and everyone who worked tirelessly in such extreme conditions to bring the fires under control and keep our community safe 🚒❤️

While most of us were trying to escape the heat, they were putting on heavy protective clothing and heading straight into it, true heroes who we should never take for granted

Sending so much love to our whole community today ❤️

Standing charges are easy to overlook because most people naturally focus on the unit rate.

But the standing charge applies every day, even when very little energy is used.

That means the tariff with the lowest unit rate is not always the cheapest overall option.

Not all brokers work with the same suppliers or contracts either.

The important thing is to compare the full cost rather than choosing one attractive number from the page.
