Rear garden / site clearance works recently undertaken at Gt Wilbraham in Cambridgeshire.

We had to cut our way through the overgrown brambles , shrubs and trees, so we could get access to the old sheds / barns.

All taken down, and different materials sorted in to piles for the next stage in the new year, getting it cleared away.

All roofing sheets carefully removed and skipped, tin sheets and scrap metal, structural timber, glass, bricks and blocks and all green waste separated and sorted.

Made the place look completely different in just a week.

Another patio completed last week at Honington in Suffolk.

Approximately 50m2 paved area plus 60m2 shingled area.

Paved area excavated to approximately 200mm depth, geotextile membrane laid over area. ✅

80mm perforated pipe installed into shingle traps , new 110mm drainage pipe installed and connected into an old well which can then be pumped out and used on the clients garden ✅

125mm granite Type 1 sub base laid and very well compacted in 2x layers ✅

All paving laid to falls on a 4-1 Sharp sand and cement , wet mix 40-50 mm full bed and all slabs / sets had a specialist paving slurry applied to help adhere to the mortar bed✅

All joints pointed the traditional ( best ) way
3-1 mix 50% sharp sand , 50% soft sand and cement mix, troweled and tooled into joints ✅

The paving slabs are 24mm thick, nice and chunky lakeland sandstone.
We made are own setts by cutting up slabs with a wet cut saw ( no dust ! ) ✅

Setts were used to transition from the lower patio area to the path and concrete ramp, the client is in his 80’s and although he’s still very sprightly, as a keen gardener, a step was not what was needed for now or the future… setts were the answer to forming the ramp , no way slabs could be twisted and turned with out causing a trip hazard and being unsightly.

A new step was added to the rear door as the old one was really not safe or well built.
And the finishing touch’s were 20mm washed stone / shingle to all traps along the house and garages, membrane put down and 20mm stone spread and compacted over the area around the well for a low maintenance garden area.

Now a couple of wash downs 🧽 with a specific stone cleaned ( no acid! ) to get rid of the construction dirt and any little marks from pointing etc and also bring out the colours nicely of the stone paving.

Got this one finished off in the wind and rain today at Hawkedon.

Shingle to the sides and full wash down and check over.

The job entailed, remove old rear and side paths.✅

Dig out, new type 1 , 100mm thick sub base on membrane.✅

Lay 100mm thick, reinforced concrete base.✅

Lay limestone paving slabs to random coursed pattern, on 50mm thick sharp sand / cement 4-1 mix base with slurry to rear of slabs.✅

Grout all joints with Fugabella grout to match.✅

3 x sets of brickwork steps with stone effect treads✅

2 x New underground drainage runs with gulleys for roof down pipes✅

Move sink drainage gulley and fit new 40mm waste pipe.✅

Relay brick paving / new paving due to excavation works for drains ✅

Remove brick path and lay new path to new set of steps in retaining wall✅

We also uncovered an old well or brick built soak away pit… couldnt see exactly what it was but not deep thank goodness!
So that was easily back filled with concrete and had a reinforced slab cast over it and tied into the paving concrete base.

Also the drains were blocking up with small roots which we cut out and removed, letting everything flow much easier.

And to top it off we had to unblock an existing drain, 2’ deep , a 90’ bend , trapped gulley which for some reason, somebody years ago wedged an old plastic bottle in and concreted around it…🤦‍♂️Unfortunately it was delaminating and blocking the drain. That led to 2 hours of fun and games…🫣😆

Another one ticked off the list for now at Norton in Suffolk this week.

We have been there from the start to clear the site (November 23) ready for piling works

Then we put in the reinforced concrete slab, all drainage and services.
Brick and blockwork etc.

Been back recently to finish the driveway, patios and paths , all the sleepers and landscaping work.

Now over to the customer to finish the planting and finish getting the grass established.

Another very enjoyable project to be part of and more great customers to work for!
We will be back at a later date for more works!
